Clean install of WinXP SP2 Home Upgrade CD

I just made the switch to WinXP SP2 last Friday and have had nothing but
trouble since.
I formatted my HDD and clean installed Win98se, immediately followed by the
WinXP SP2 Home install.
Now my favorite online game "Soldner" either won't load up, or won't stay up
for more than 10 minutes without crashing to desktop. *My game ran perfectly
under Win98se.
I have all the latest drivers for everything in my case, including my router
firmware, updated for XP.
I was informed, by a fellow gamer, that I should not have installed Win98se
at all, and just "clean installed" WinXP SP2, as online game configuration
can be problematic with the "upgrade" install.

After I formatted my HDD, I stuck in my Win98se bootdisk to load CDrom
support. I then inserted the WinXP SP2 upgrade CD and got the error message
that this can't be done in DOS, or something like that.

What steps do I need to follow to get a clean install with my new WinXP SP2
Home Edition Upgrade, without using a Win98se bootdisk?

Yes, do not install win98 and upgrade.
Do a clean install.
The xp cd is bootable. If needed, set your bios to boot to the cdrom first.
Put in xp cd, reboot computer. It will boot to the cd and the install
begins. Follow the on-screen instructions to format the drive and install
xp. When asked insert the win98 cd as proof.

Make sure you have the Win 98 CD handy and follow the steps in the link
below.
You boot from the CD and do a clean install.

Provided your 98SE CD is a retail one, with a Win98 folder of CAB files,
and not some OEM Restore CD, then you boot the XP CD direct. Enter
Setup, and after the license agreement take New Install. When it asks
you to confirm where, hit ESC; select and delete the current partition
and make a new RAW one to be formatted at the next stage

If you positively cannot boot a CD, then you can use the Win98 floppy -
make sure it has Smartdrv.exe on it. Boot it, with CD support, run
Smartdrv
then go to the XP CD
CD i386
WINNT

which will load up the XP Setup from it
