MS Anti spyware Defender (Beta2)

Peter

I currently run MS Antispyware Beta1 & see that a new version beta2 now
called Defender is out.
The web page says I will be automatically advised of the upgrade - I
haven't! I have automatic check for updates set & a forced check for
updates says I'm up-to-date. (Help about confirms it's still Beta1).
I've downloaded Defender but there appears to be no info about upgrading -
should I uninstall Beta1 or will Beta2 sort itself out.

Thanks for any advice.

Unless you're a BETA tester, you shouldn't install either one of them.

More and more software vendors are publishing BETA versions of software
to the general public. It would be nice if they made it very, very clear
that if the user elects to install and test the BETA software that they
are doing so at their own risk and that in all cases BETA software is
NOT to be used in any way other than in a test environment/machine,
definitely not on a production or daily use machine that the user relies
on foruninterrupted functionality. I believe it is encumbent on such
vendors to make such facts known up front, in bold, with no mistake
about it, and provide clear contact information concerning support for
such BETA products.

I also note that I had to find Defender when Antispyware stopped updating.

However, I've used both Antispyware Beta and then Defender with no
difficulty.

Antispyware removed some really nasty stuff that Norton and other software
couldn't touch.

Defender has found and removed (with a full system scan that takes more than
30 minutes on my not-too-loaded computer) some "Trojan loaders" than no one
else located.

Defender will update automatically with other Windows updates.

My thought (as a user, not a professional) is that you should remove
Antispyware, and download and install Defender and use it as part of your
computer cleaning arsenal. If it gives you trouble, then remove it.

Here is a way you can schedule Windows Defender signature updates to download
and install automatically that is independent of Windows Update. I get
Windows Defender signature updates this way and have never had a problem with
it.

1. Create the following bat file:
C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\WDSignatureUpdate.bat

@echo off
"C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MpCmdRun.exe" SignatureUpdate

2. Create the following scheduled task:
"C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\WDSignatureUpdate.bat.lnk"

Schedule the task to run whenever you want.

Hi Peter
I'm sticking with beta 1 for the moment, having seen too many others
encountering problems - and updates are still being provided in beta1.
There have been quite a few posts re Defender, in this group and others.
The main suggestion has been to uninstall beta1 first should you decide to
go for Defender.
There is plenty of good advice, just in this post, from people who know.
