I have xp home edition and I have it set for *start menu* not classic start
menu. Well I downloaded *mru blaster* and lost all my icons on the left
hand side. It is divided in two and I want those icons there but don't know
what to do besides removing mru blaster. Please help.

Those icons represent a type of MRU list. MRU= Most Recently Used. The left
hand column of the XP start menu shows Most Frequently Used programs. To
"weight" the programs for this list, history is collected for the programs
in a manner very similar to MRU.

I'm not familiar with MRU blast. If it has a main window, you may be able
to open that and then look around for some menus where you can adjust the
program's settings. Perhaps there is an option to leave the Start Menu
information alone. There may be some information in the program's help file
or in its documentation that can guide you with this too.

Worst case scenario: Uninstall the program to return to your old settings.
As you use programs, the list on the start menu will begin to rebuild.

If you ever get a program on this list that you don't really need, right
click on it and select "remove from this list." This will send it to the
"back of the line" and allow another program to step up and take its place.

Tip: If you set the start menu to use small icons, you can increase the
number of programs that can be shown in that area. I have done this with my
start menu and currently have a list that is 15 programs long.

The setting for small icons can be found here: Right click the start button
and select Properties. Click the Customize button. At the very top, you'll
see where you can choose between small and large icons. In the section
right below that setting is where you can increase the number of programs
that will be displayed.

Run MRU Blaster when you start feeling paranoid about what entries are in your recently used lists in the registry. I've got the product but rarely use it because I'm not really afraid of someone else seeing where I visit. Wiping MRUs from the registry is more about worrying what someone else will see that walks over to your PC. I don't visit, ahem, those "adult entertainment" sites so there's no real need to hide to where I navigate. I find MRU Blaster handy for another reason: for trimming down the MRU lists in programs that get long with defunct or unneeded entries.

The list on the leftside of the cutsy fluffy version of the Start menu is a MRU. So just go start those programs and they'll show up there again.

Oh, and if you don't want that MRU list to keep disappearing in the Start menu, don't use the MRU Scheduler to keep rerunning it. Just purge manually when you feel you have something to hide or you want shorter MRU lists in applications.

Thanks loads. My problem is that I scoot around on the internet a lot and
end up with tons of urls in the *run* box and also in I.E.. I just want to
clear those areas. Your info helped a lot.

Thanks for your time

I use MRUBlaster on a daily basis after a surfing session as part of a regular routine to keep the junk on my OS to a minimum. If you double click the MRU Blaster Icon to open the program and then click the settings button you will see a whole list of what gets cleaned and you can check or uncheck boxs as you want. Good luck.

Thank you for your input. It is much appreciated. My problem is I don't
know which ones that I should not click off. Obviously I do like the
*cutesy* start in the start menu. (The one with two sides.)
As they say, live and learn and that is what I am doing.

Thanks for your time.

I don't see a specific setting in MRU Blaster that clearly identifies it as the one that will wipe the Start menu's MRU list. Seems easy enough to figure out, though. Run a program so the MRU in the Start menu gets populated. Open MRU Blaster and uncheck every entry under its Setting menu, and then check the first category. Run MRU Blaster to wipe MRUs. Did the MRU in the Start menu get wiped. If not, enable the next selection in MRU Blaster's settings and run it again, then recheck if the MRU in the Start menu got blasted. And so on. Eventually you will enable one of the settings in MRU Blaster that has it wipe the MRU in the Start menu. That's the only you don't want to leave enabled. There's 20 settings in MRU Blaster so it would probably take all of about 10 minutes to find which one clears the MRU in the Start menu.
