Moving a file to a new folder (drag & drop) destroys the file

When I move a file to a new folder using drag & drop (right button),
the file is removed from its original folder; but the file in the new
folder is not accessible. The move cannot be undone.

For graphic files, the thumbnail does not appear. For other files, the
icon appears normal. But in all cases, the file cannot be opened by the
application for that file type (e.g. Word for .doc, Corel for .jpg).

The application reports an error when opening to the effect that the
file name or format is invalid. Trying to delete the file thru Win
Explorer results in an error message "access is denied...make sure disc
is not full...and that file is not currently in use". The only way to
delete the file is to bypass the recylce bin.

I'm running XP PRO SP2 on AMD Athlon 64. Main HDD is split into two
60GB partitions. C is NTFS; D is FAT32.

HELP!!!!

Is it only when dragging and dropping that this happens? What about Edit
Move Files from within Explorer.

I would run scandisk to see if you have any disk or file-system errors.

Files get clobbered via drag & drop, or via menu. Scandisk showed no
errors.
So, I did some systematic experimentation. I have two HDD. Drive-1 has
two partitions: C (NTFS) and D (FAT32). Drive-2 has a sinlge partition,
F (FAT32). I moved files from one folder to another and got the
following results
From To Result
F => F ok
F => D ok
F => C ok
F => My Doc ok

D => D ok
D => F ok
D => C ok
D => My Doc ok

C => C ok
C => D ok
C => F ok
C => My Doc <<failed>>

My Doc=> C ok
My Doc=> D ok
My Doc=> F ok
My Doc=> My Doc <<failed>>

The problem occurs only when moving files into or within My Documents
and only when the files are sourced from C-drive.
Any ideas?

Corrupted user profile.

thanks for the tip. I created another user profile. Under it, the moves
work. Is there a way of 'uncorrupting' the original user profile? If
not, can all of the files and setting be transferred to the new profile
(esp Outlook)?

You're welcome.

Possibly but not might be worth the effort.

Yes.

Here you go...

How to copy data from a corrupted user profile to a new profile:

There's a link at the bottom concerning the Outlook stuff. Read it, too.

Good luck,

Man, I'm in deep doo!!
even in safe mode, I can't copy all the files across. I get denials on
various files and folders:
"busy or in use" messages from Explorer. I'd hate to have to reformat
and start all over again.
I'm always up to date on antivirus (McAfee) and pretty judicous about
avoiding spyware and such crap. I don't know if I've been zapped, or if
I messed myself up.
This is a new machine. I restored (from XP backup) my files and
settings (Local docs & settings) from my old machine. Did all that many
weeks ago; but I didn't notive the file move problem until a couple of
weeks ago. It could have been there all along.
Thoughts?
