Desktop Drag and Drop Settings

My XP Home equipped machine at home allows me to drag and drop Desktop
icons/folders to different locations. When I do so the file disappears from
the desktop and reappears in the new location - as if it is doing a cut
operation.

My XP Pro equipped machine at work allows the same drag and drop, but it
leaves the file/folder/icon in its original location AND places a copy in the
new location - as if it was copied.

My preference is for the "cut" style drag and drop. Where can I change this
setting?

Use a right click drag and drop. That brings up a menu asking whether you
want to copy or move.

When right-clicking on a desktop item you are given the cut and paste
options, but there isn't a drag-and-drop option. There has to be a setting
somewhere (or in the registry) that specifies whether desktop dragging and
dropping uses cut or paste.

Right click on the object and drag to the destination, release, and the menu
pops up asking if you want to move or copy.

The default for drag & drop between two locations on the same drive is move.

The default for drag & drop between two locations on different drives is copy.

Perhaps that is the difference you are seeing.

The default action with drag & drop is to move if the file is going to
the same drive letter, but to copy if it is going to a different drive
letter. So, if you dragged a file from c:\something to c:\whatever, it
would be moved. If you dragged the file from c:\something to
d:\whatever, it would be copied.
