Drag and drop

Is "drag and drop" a function of the operating system or of a program? I
recently installed Paint Shop Pro 8 on my new XP (Media Center) Computer. If
I drag image files from Windows Explorer and drop them onto the PSP desktop
icon, it does not open the program displaying that image. (On my old Win98SE
computer, it did). However, if I drag and drop images onto MS Paint, that
does open the program displaying that image. Is there some setting in the Op
Sys to determine which programs open with drag and drop?

Hi,

It's a function of the OS, the problem indicates that PSP doesn't support
that function, or that it is not set to open that file type.

Hi, Rick-

Well, I've since discovered that drag-and-drop doesn't work for MS Word or
MS Excel on my new XP machine, whereas they did on my old Win98SE machine.
Similarly, drag-and-drop doesn't work for Paint Shop Pro on the XP machine
but it did on the 98 machine (installed directly from the same CD), although
it can open those images using the Open dialog box.

But drag-and-drop DOES work for jpegs on both machines. There must be a
settling somewhere that I'm missing.

Second reply. I meant to say that drag-and-drop does work for MS Paint
(jpegs) on both XP and 98SE machines. Also I want to clarify that I'm talking
about dragging a file name from the Windows Explorer view and dropping it
onto a desktop icon.

More research: dragging and dropping files from Windows Explorer onto desktop
icons opens the programs ONLY for Windows Accessories: Paint, WordPad,
NotePad, etc. It does not work for installed programs such as MS Word, Excel,
Acrobat Reader, Paint Shop Pro, etc.

I have "drag and drop" enabled in Start button | properties (right click) |
start menu | customize | advanced | check "drag and drop" box.

Drag and drop works for all my desktop icons in Win98. Can you help me get
it to work in WinXP (Media Center)?

Hi,

Have you checked that "enable drag and dropping" is check in the start menu
properties (click customize, it's on the advanced tab).

Hi, Rick-

(My next two posts, which I submitted before I got yours below, have
additional information, which I'll summarize here:

Specifically, I'm trying to drag a file name from Windows Explorer, drop it
on a desktop program icon, and have that file open in that program. That is
what I was able to do with all programs in Windows 98SE.

Yes, "enable drag and drop" is checked in the start menu properties. In
fact, I discovered that it works in Windows Accessories (Paint, Notepad,
Wordpad) but not in installed programs such as Word, Excel, Acrobat Reader,
or Paint Shop Pro under Win XP Media Edition. So I can drag a jpeg from
Explorer, drop it on the MS Paint desktop icon and have Paint open that jpeg,
but it doesn't work for Paint Shop Pro, even though I've associated jpegs
with PSP.

I appreciate any further suggestions.

Hi, Rick

I downloaded the .reg file and installed as directed, but nothing has changed.
(Interesting website, though. I've bookmarked it for further review.)
Continued suggestions welcome.
