Mouse does not work (notebook)

I connected a Targus ultra mini optical mouse to a new notebook, my first.

There seems no way to make it work.

I have checked, the device is working properly, and troubleshot, trying
everything suggested, many times, but nothing seems to make it work. It
would not take over from the mouse controlled from the pad.

I assume the present operational mouse is called Synapse PS/2 Port Pointing
Device.
The new one is labeled HID compliant mouse, and it's not accompanied by any
installation software.

Other than this, everything works great. Any ideas, please?

Try the mouse in another computer. If it doesn't work in a different
computer, the mouse is bad. If it works, then guess what, the new computer
is bad. Now, lets try to solve your new computer's problem. Open Control
Panel, Click on Mouse. What is showing under the hardware tab? If your new
mouse shows here click on the name of the mouse and see what the Device
status is. If it states it is working properly, you may have to disable the
Synapse drive. Of course this could also cut off your escape route if the
new mouse doesn't start working.

One last thought. I believe this is a wired USB mouse. Try it in a
different port on the computer. Remove all drivers for the mouse and then
reinstall the mouse to the port and see if it sets up correctly.

Hello,

You may have a "conflit" in bios... normally HP for instance has bios
setting for mouse definitions... you can say that when your lid is open is
the touchpad that works or the external mouse or both the same thing happens
when the lid is closed... so for example if you have the option in bios that
says the mouse that works either with the lid open or closed is the touchpad
you can connect several different external mouses that no one will work.
Check your bios setting... you should see some F1,F2,F8 or F10 reference in
startup referring to bios or setup.
