Older wireless mouse not working at all...

I recently got a new Dell XPS M140 laptop w/WinXP Media Center Edition. I
have an old Targus wireless mouse Moldel: PAUM005. I tried to use it on my
new laptop, but it just sits there. I get a light on the USB adapter, but
nothing on the mouse itself when I push the reset button. I went to the
Targus homepage and read about setting up this model and everything. I have
installed, uninstalled, run update driver, device manager, driver
compatibility, etc.., but still to no avail. Anyone with suggestions out
there? I also put new batteries in as well.

I also bought another mouse as well, but I can't find the package and there
is no manufacturer on the mouse. I get the same problem with this one as the
one above as far as a light on the USB adapter, but nothing on the mouse
itself. I also did all the updates, installs, etc..

My computer tells me that the device is enable and that it is working
properly. It recognizes both mice as HID-compliant. What is wrong? Help
please.

You just bought a brand new laptop. How about investing in a brand new laptop mouse?

Most laptops will let you use a mouse and the touchpad at the same time.
Most will automatically let the mouse have control unless you very
purposefully access the touchpad. However, yours may be different.

Check around in your start menu and control panel for an icon specifically
for the touchpad. Launch it and look for settings regarding the use of a
mouse. Experiment until you find something that works for you.

You may even prefer to have the touchpad disabled completely when a mouse
is connected. This is an optional setting (may or may not find it
available). If available and desirable, obviously delay that change until
after you get a working mouse setup.
