Thank you, all, for such very good replies. These are fine
introductions to some new titles (for me).

Hi,

Is there a list of the programs that almost everyone should install on
their new computer? What freeware programs do you find most valuable.
Any suggestions would be helpful.

Thank you.

Seems to me that given the impending euthanization of Windows 98 come
June 30, a useful category would be survival tools for those who don't
want to (or can't) downgrade to XP.

I think W98 will last for ages; the software exists for all I want, and so
does the hardware for a long time to come.

Easily till I can have a look at Vista, or try to get enough smarts to do

An operating system, perhaps? ;o)

But on a sidenote, I personally think that there are few (if any) single
programs that stand out so far ahead and above all alternatives (free or
otherwise) that the alternatives cannot be considered.

I consider the amount of high quality free software available as source
for almost endless possibilites, and I freely mix and match different
programs. One of the many beauties of "free" is that you really don't
have to consider the alternatives as alternatives: They might as well be
supplements! I.e., if program A has a feature you really really like to
use occasionally, while program B is much more efficient for day-to-day
use, then the choice is actually a lot simpler than it looks: Download,
install and use both. On this computer alone I have at least five
freeware programs capable of playing audio and video, in addition to
those that came bundled with various software and hardware.

Freeware can even be a useful supplement to commercial software. We use
Microsoft Office at work, but I still download and install Open Office.
Not to use instead of MS Office, but to pull out of my sleave in cases
where MS Office falls short. It has turned out to be very useful in
several cases, and a real lifesaver in at least two.
