about AVG. Is it the most popular AV?

For realtime scanners there are basically three freeware options:

AVG:
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1

Avast:
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

Antivir:
http://www.free-av.com/

My suggestion would be to try them all out and decide which one you want
to keep. It all depends on your personal wishes and system.
FWIW: Avast is the more resource-hungry, wouldn't recomend it for a slow
sytem. There are reports of updateprobelms with AVG and Antivir, but I
never had those problems. And Antivir might nag you during updating, but
again, I don't have that problem with the new version.
If I had to guess based on reading this ng, I think that of all people
using one of these three:
~40% use Avast
~40% use AVG
~20% use Antivir
But again, just try them and decide for yourself, IMHO you can't go wrong
with either of them.

ISTR that Avast can be asked to check on file reads and on file
writes but this takes power. You could set it to just file reads.

You probably get those stats because {{buffs finger nails against
jacket lapel}} we here tend to be, er, sophisticated users.

In the wider world, I think it's fair to say that AVG is a runaway
success.

One point which might be worth mentioning is support. Free AVG
has no official support but, just as with a Ford car, there is
nearly always a neighborhood fix-it man nearby.

AVAST has an active and very knowledgable forum run entirely by
*users* on the Avast web site.

But again, just try them and decide for yourself, IMHO you can't
go wrong with either of them.

Antivir's English language support group, also on its website, is
small and you will encounter bits & peieces (like button labels)
in German.

I personally use Anti-vir (www.free-av.com) and I am pleased with it. I
have no desire at this point in trying anything else. Version 7 has
some nice features.

Warning!! Do not try to run them together. Uninstall one before trying
another.

I use AVG Antivirus. I loaded and tested Avast and AntiVir separately,
and they were fine products in my opinion. To be honest, I just liked
AVG more than the others---although I don't have any convincing or
persuasive reasons to explain why I liked AVG better.

AVG is ok. Avast or AntiVir are better in my opinion. But to be
honest, any of these 3 are probably fine.

Avast is my choice.

I've been using AVG since W98 - now w/ XPSP2 and it hasn't let me down.
I'm staying with it as long as it serves the purpose. I've had no reason to
change to another in all these years. Just mho based on my years of experience
using it.

I use avg on some of my computers an antivir on this one that I'm on and
I put avast on one of my freinds computers. They are all good programs,
and they dont take over your computer like alot (or all)of the popular
non-free programs.

Yep, I have tried many of the paid offerings also, and to tell you the
truth, many of them are bloated and have memory leaks and other bugs as
well as problems. Paying for something is no guarantee of anything. So
I agree with you there..

programs, here is the latest:

You can notice that Antivir seems to be the most effective freeware
program in this particular test.

Markku,

Are you familiar with this site and/or VirusP (the Greek virus
collector) who did the testing? Why was an SP1 WinXP box used and not
an SP2 system?

BTW, germane to this thread, a couple of other links for your perusal:

Ivan, I stand corrected. AVG was the first AV I uninstalled and back
then Grisoft provided very little. Not even a proper description of
the viruses. The forum is much-improved I see.

Am surprised there is so much debate because AVG has never offered a
lot in the way of fine controls. In a way that is, like for Zone
Alarm, one of their strengths. But it is also a weakness for when I
found AVG7 checking unnecessarily on accesses to INI files especially
as the checking slowed other apps down.

=====================

I have long since abandoned AVG for the reason of its on-going and
continual difficulties of reaching its server for updates. After
installing AVAST, I have been pleased with the reliably near-daily
updates, as well as periodic newer versions. All with pleasant
vocal announcements (which can be silenced). I would say:

AVG is a decent antivirus client, provided one can get consistent
updates.

AVAST is more than decent. It has proved reliable, fast, and helpful.
