i have recently go to a lcd monitor and cannot get the screen size to match
my screen
in older versions of windows one could change the shape of the screen to fit
now it seems that the driver determines this and my driver must be stupid
because both screens now are incorrect the wide screen shows to be be more
square and the square one shows wide and as one can imagine this is not
benificial to game play

Does your display have an Autosize option or button?
If so try that instead of using the driver options.

An LCD monitor usually runs at a factory set resolution...the object is to
set the display driver to that same resolution.
If at that resolution the screen is too wide/small the controls at the
bottom of the monitor let you adjust the size of the picture to fit the size
of the screen.

perfect fix but why is this a problem with LCDs and not with CRTs

Because a CRT has a scanning electron beam, not individual elements.
