Modem Driver

I recently installed a new driver for my dial up modem
from the Windows Update site (I also have a cable
modem). Ever since the new driver was installed, I
cannot use the dial up modem to send any faxes. My fax
program (WinFax) keeps asking me to set up the modem, but
when I do, the system reboots. I tried to roll back the
driver, no help. It was working fine until I downloaded
the new driver. I have uninstalled & reinstalled the
modem at least a dozen times & now always have the same
problem. I've tried using a different fax program
(Bitware), but it does the same thing. Everytime I run
autodetect, it gets to Com 3 (where the modem is
installed), it reboots the system.
O/S is Windows XP & the modem is compatible.
Is there any way to either manually delete the drivers or
change the Com Port that is used?
Any help is appreciated.
Thank you.

Can you either roll back the driver or do a system restore? Either
would restore the original driver.

Remove or disable the modem then start up xp,then shut down, reinstall modem
in another slot if possible or re-enable from bios if onboard, startup
again, cancel on all prompts to install new found hardware and see if you
can put original drivers in. I, myself, won't install drivers from ms
update, I get them from manufacturer and usually wait till I've seen enough
good about the update to make it worth it. If your system is running good
and is very stable leave the drivers alone
