mmc.exe causing Memory cannot be "read" problems

Hi,

WinXP Pro Sp2, latest updates done yesterday.

I have a permanent situation when I want to go into Administrative tools ->
Event Viewer. Then when I click System for example everything is fine.
The only problem is when I click Application. Then I have an error saying:
Event viewer: mmc.exe - application error:
Instruction at 0x7c936bd1 refers to memory at address 0xe3ebc7c1. Memory
cannot be "read".

I click OK, the entire event viewer closes. This happens everytime I click
Application in the event viewer. The addresses are the same.

Earlier I had a serious problem with explorer.exe causing this error
(different adresses though) at boot time. I clicked OK and the explorer.exe
process was re-run and caused the problem again. The system could not start
the desktop and start menu etc. I ran a google lookup and someone said about
Spybot S&D causing this after immunize. As a matter of fact it was like 1
day after I updates Spybot and immunized all new components. So I went into
Safe, de-immunized all in Spybot, reboot. Explorer.exe works fine.
Then I found out that I cannot play divx/xvid videos beacuse of the similar
problem... I downloaded fresh copy of the Divx Codec, installed it over the
old one and it helped.

But now I discovered this problem with event viewer. I am worried that there
may be some other problems which I have not yet discovered...

Yesterday I ran Windows Update and installed all security updates etc.
(which I was not doing since couple of months) but this has not brought any
relief to the mmc.exe errors... Also ran spybot "check for problems"
(nothing found), antivirus scan, Ad-Aware from Lavasys but there were no
errors found.
Still the problem with mmc.exe persists.

Anyone knows where to check for what? Seems like a serious system problem ?

I ran memtest for the entire evening and night. No errors found so
physically the RAM is OK.

Robbo,

I would first run the latest version
see : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/907265

then reboot your machine, and try again

Thanks for your reply and the update info. I will try that tomorrow (that's
my office computer)

Funny thing though, I have right - clicked the Application and selected
"clear all events".
Now there are 0 events and no errors :)

Edwin,

I have updated the mmc and currently it is a bit better. It is just that it
does not crash but displays a nice message that MMC has detected an error in
Snap-in and asks me if I want to ignore them or send the error report to
Microsoft and close the MMC program. If I select ignore the problem then I
think everything is OK and I can browse through logged events.
What I have noticed is that when there are no events (when I clear them)
there are no errors...

Perhaps I should reinstall the snap-in "application" ? But where can I find
its files? Maybe I could replace them from another XP system...
