mmc.exe - application error

N

nick rorke

just recently I have been getting this error message
whenever I close Device Manager (and sometimes with other
programs too - Media Player i think):

mmc.exe - Application Error
The instruction at "0x77f5bd2" referenced memory at
"0x00890010". The memory could not be "read". Click on OK
to terminate the program.

Anybody know what is going on and what I may do fix things?

XP Pro
2.1GHz Athlon
Asus A7V8X mobo
512MB RAM
pretty much all the latest Windows updates installed

Thanks,

Nick.

I am having the same problem. I get the following error message
when I close Device Manager.

mmc.exe - Application Error
The instruction at "0x77f5171c" referenced memory at "0x00890010".
The memory could not be "read".
Click OK to terminate the program.

I tried Kelly's suggestion without success. (It's always possible
I messed up.) Any other suggestions? Does Microsoft recognize
this as an OS problem?

To those who assert that it is a bad memory chip or 3rd party
software. I don't think so. I get exactly the same error on my
Dell Inspiron 8100 laptop and my SuperMicro P4SDA+ based desktop.
Also, a search for "0x00890010" finds a number of others with
this problem.
