My computer contracted a virus which is not allowing me login access to
Windows XP. I get an error message that says that I am missing my
wininit.dll file. My tech support line (Dell) tried to assist, but were
unsuccessful. They advised me to seek assistance. I cannot even get into
safe mode. Only safe mode with dos prompt. Help please.

If your dealing with the Spyaxe trojan, the correct name of the
file is wininet.dll.

If you can boot into Safe Mode with command prompt see if you
can locate a copy of that file in this location:

C:\Windows\System32\dllcache\wininet.dll

If you find one, copy that file to C:\Windows\System32.
Reboot and see what happens.

If that doesn't work here's another approach:
Do you have access to another computer running the same version
of XP at the same service pack level as the one with the
problem?
Do both computers have floppy drives?
If so, copy C:\Windows\System32\wininet.dll from the good
computer to a floppy disk. Take the floppy to the problem
system and run the following command:
Copy A:\wininet.dll C:\Windows\System32
Reboot the computer.

Note: If one of the computers doesn't have a floppy drive, you
can try doing the same with a CD.

If the problem is still not fixed, you can try this procedure:
If you have an XP installation CD at the same service pack
level you can do the same thing through the Recovery Console.
Go into the BIOS of your computer (hit F2 at startup) and
change the boot order to make the CD drive the first boot
option.
Boot from the CD and follow the prompts to get to the recovery
console.
Once you're at the command prompt, enter the following command:

Expand D:\I386\wininet.dl_ C:\Windows\System32\wininet.dll

Note: The above command goes on the assumption that D is your
CD drive and Windows is installed on C. Make sure to enter the
appropriate drive letters if your systems configuration differs
from the norm.

Reboot your computer and let it start from the hard drive.
Once this problem is resolved, change the boot order back to
what it was originally. Usually that would be floppy first,
hard drive second and CD drive last.

Here are a couple of articles about the Recovery Console that
you may find helpful:
