missing "Safely Remove Hardware" green arrow

Hi All,

I cleaned up an infected computer for a customer last week.
The only thing I could not get to work again was his "Safely
Remove Hardware" green arrow.

It does not show up when you insert a USB stick. And, it
does not show up in "Task Bar and Start Menu Properties",
"Task Bar" tab, "Customize" either. (All my Google searching
told me to go here and re-enable it. But, it does not show up.)

Is there a way to restore this?

Many thanks,
-T

You can create a link (shortcut) on your desktop that does [virtually] the
same thing.

Right-click on an empty area of your desktop and choose New > Shortcut.

In the box "Type the location of the item" copy and paste the following:

rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL Hotplug.dll

....Click on [ok] and choose a name (e.g. Safe Removal), then click on [ok]
to finish.

You can then pick an icon for you shortcut by right-clicking on the new
shortcut and choosing 'Properties'. Then click on Change Icon button and
navigate the browse box to: C:\Windows\hotplug.dll ...and click on [ok]
and then [ok] to finish.

This new shortcut will function just like right-clicking on the original
taskbar icon. It brings up a page with all connected removable (hot-swap)
devices so you can click on the desired one to safely eject that hardware,
such as a pen drive.

The disappearance of regular notification icons is a seemingly reoccurring
feature of XP and one that there's little can be done to stop this from
happening, that I know of. But, at least with this new shortcut, you will
always be able to 'Safely Remove' any hardware that requires it.
