Is there a "switch" somewhere I need to turn on to get the safely remove hardware icon to show up on
the task bar? I have an IBM thinkpad R40 laptop and when I put a flash disk in, the removal icon
does not appear like it always does in my other computers.

Hi ... What I do is right-click within the notification area, and then click
Properties and remove the check mark on " hide inactive icons "
This way you will see all the icons that are running

Yes, I get the chime, but no icon, I had already gone into the customize taskbar menu and changed
it from "hide when inactive" to "always show". When I rebooted, the icon was there. This morning
though, the icon was gone again and the action was back to the default setting of "hide when
inactive"...

perhaps I picked up a virus

See this is what happens when you cross post. get broken link so don't keep
up with other suggestions.
I saw in another post. similar to yours that they get chime but no icon.
device is seen in device manager but not in my computer or explorer.

The Answer is:
Start>Run>compmgmt.msc
Device should be listed under Storage Devices.
rt click on it and Assign Drive letter.
should work!!

well, if it already has drive letter, it should have been seen in my computer.

In another thread Danie Martin has the perfect solution so here it is:

1. Open Start, Run, type (without quotes) "services.msc" and press OK.
2. Search for the 'SSDP Discovery Service' service and double-click it.
3. Select 'Disabled' in the Startup type box.
4. Click OK and restart Windows.

This simple procedure, returned not only my safely remove hardware icon to
the system tray, but also my version cue, sound, printer, and virus
protection icons!!
