Safely remove hardware

E

em21

Can anybody help me with this problem?

How do I get the Safely Remove Hardware feature to tell me when it is Safe
to remove the hardware?

Before, to disconnect hardware from an USB port, I clicked the Safely Remove
Hardware icon at the right of my taskbar tray, I got a prompt with choices
of the hardware to disconnect. When I clicked the one I wanted to disconnect
I got a message that said, (You can safely remove the hardware).

Now, when I click to disconnect, I get the promt to choose the hardware I
want to disconnect, but when I click it, the chosen hardware disappear from
the prompt, but I don't get the message that says it's safe to disconnect.

I went to the

Safely Remove Hardware window and clicked the device I want to disconnect,
and then clicked Properties/Polices.

In Policies I get 2 choices:

Optimize for quick removal.

Optimized for performance.

I think the one I want is Optimized for performance, but I have it set
there, and it doesn't give me the (it is safe to remove message). I tried
both ways and it doesn't work either way.

I have Windows XP/SP3

Thanks,

Edith

I don't know if I have Windows Search 4.0. How do I find out if have it? And
if I have it, what should I do? Remove it? Is it OK to remove?

Thanks,

Putting your question together with the answer given by "teabag" and
assuming that you have Windows Search 4.0 installed (or even some other
installation that is causing the same sort of issue) then it appears to me
that your problem is just with the *appearance* of the "It is now safe to
remove drive <drive> from the system" message.

If that is so, then just by left-clicking on the [system tray] icon, and
then on the device and drive letter in question, will be enough!

The appearance of the "It is now safe..." message is not important, just
proceed as though you had seen it.

However, if it is NOT safe to remove the hardware at that time, I firmly
believe that you WILL see a different message telling you so.

The message telling you that it is NOT safe to remove hardware is not in the
same 'format' as the 'Balloon Tip' that shows up when it is safe.

The NOT SAFE message is, in fact, what's termed a 'Message Box' with an [ok]
button on it. This would show up when [if] it's required.

So, again, I wouldn't worry about the absence of the little yellow balloon
that used to show up telling you it's okay to remove your device. It seems
that it's just a case of it being invisible due to some other software you
may have installed.

Just proceed as if you HAD seen it.

Yes, you got it Tim. It is the appearace of the message that it is now safe
to remove that I'm missing. I been able to get it for the last few years, now
all of sudden is gone.

When I right click the icon, it opens the Safely Remove Hardware window
(grey square) that shows what USB port, or ports I'm using. The one that
shows properties and all that.

If I left click the icon, I get the rectangular message that shows what
device is connected. When I click the device I want to close the device name
just dissapears.

Thank you for all the information you gave. At least I won't be afraid to
disconnect if I don't see the message. But, I sure would like to get it back.
I've grown to depend on it. Is there some troubleshooting I can do to get it
back?

Thanks,

What you've got to remember is two things:

1). The fact that once you've clicked on a device in the 'Safely Remove
Hardware' icon's list, it can only be ONE of TWO answers! Either it's the
[missing] SAFE message OR you WILL (I firmly believe) get the other message
(because, as my reasoning goes, this other message is not displayed using
the same technique). You can try this out - open a program that lives on a
pen drive and click on the 'Safely Remove Hardware' icon. I bet you get the
NOT SAFE message displayed clearly. (but I'd still like to know for sure)

....and

2). If you have *any* drives set [configured] to "Optimized for quick
removal" in it's property page, even though you CAN go through the 'Safely
Remove Hardware' icon process - it is entirely unnecessary. You CAN just
unplug it IF it configured this way.

OK, I got the "The device cannot be stopped now" message when I clicked the
icon with my storage device open. So, you're right.

Thank you for your help.
Thanks everybody else for your input.

Yes, it could be done like that, except that for one, I'm such a
scatterbrain, I'd loose my head if if wasn't attached, as they say. Second, I
tend to do various things at the same time and frequently need remainders for
one thing or another. Third, I'm afraid to ruin costly devices, and losing
important records buy disconnecting while it's still open.

Thanks for your interest

Let Windows tell you if it's OK to remove.

Copy this string to the command line in a desktop shortcut.

%windir%\system32\RunDll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll

Edith's [em21] problem was that the 'Safely Remove Hardware' icon WAS
there in the 'Notification Area' but that the 'pop-up' balloon, that
tells you that it IS safe to remove your device, did not show up.

Is that the same problem you are having?

If so, then what Edith and I agreed upon was that while the "It is now
safe to remove your hardware" balloon did not show up, after clicking on
the appropriate hardware tag on left-clicking the taskbar icon, if it
were *not* safe, then the other message telling you "Your device cannot
be detached from the system right now as it is being used" WOULD show
up.

This is because the "You cannot detach your device" message is of a
different format (message box) that the "It is now safe..." message
(balloon tip) and is not affected by the same no-show problem.

So, if you click on the icon to request safe removal of your device,
and, after a few seconds, you don't get any message - then it is safe to
remove your device.

Only if you get the message "It is not possible to disconnect your
device right now..." message, that you should take note, as we have
found that this second message is not affected.

If your problem is slightly different from this, please reply and we'll
try and resolve it.

Dear , if that device disappear on the USB remove Window, it means its power
was disconnected.

so you can remove safely...don't worry!

but it is better to checking this essay:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/883517

other user famous problem with ejecting USB devices:

***laptop users use a power option plan to save on battery...this plan
include a feature named suspend USB.
This feature allows windows to disconnecting power of USB device when it is
not in use.

but users may take problems to waking it up!

do fixing this :

go to your power option and then select your plan=> advance ... => USB
setting => disable suspending USB.

***I know Windows Vista and Seven uses a service named ready boost.

this service use flash memory as RAM and makes problem for users to removing
flash memory.

you can stop this feature by :

Run => services.msc => readyboost
