Here are links to help you troubleshoot the cd drive:

HOW TO: Troubleshoot Issues That Occur When You Write Data to a CD-R or
CD-RW Optical Disc in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;en-us;q324129

CD-R Drive or CD-RW Drive Is Not Recognized As a Recordable Device
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=316529

There is always the possibility that your cd drive has died. Swap it out
for a known-working one. If that solves the issue, discard the old
drive.

Rather than contacting Microsoft tech support, it would be more
practical to take the machine to a professional computer repair shop
(not your local version of BigStoreUSA). Someone who can see the
machine is going to be able to diagnose and fix it far more quickly and
efficiently than someone only hearing about it on the telephone. That
said, here are links for Microsoft:

Thanks for the infor If it was a old cd drive I would but this comp is only 3
week old and the cd drive works well it is just the recording tab that does
not show up in Properties that seems to be the problem.

The newness of hardware is irrelevant. In fact, if hardware is going to
fail it will usually do so pretty quickly or go for years.

I'm not saying for sure that hardware is your issue, but you should be
aware that the fact that the computer is 3 weeks old has nothing to do
with whether your cd-rw drive works or not.

Naturally, you have checked and are quite sure that the drive in your
new computer *is* a burner and not CD/DVD-*ROM*, right?

I agree with you that it does not matter old or new but the drive works well
I have tested it writing to dvd and cd with Nero no problems the drive shows
up in windows explorer no problems there but it won't show up in send to and
thats because the recording tab is missing in properties .
I really do thank everyone who as replyed as I have entered this problem
under send to, its not that I need it it is just bugging me that it won't
work from xp .
