Missing checkboxes in Folder Options-View

I couldn't find other info or posts on this, but I apolgize if it's been
covered, and hope it has.

On three PCs, all setup with one user as admin, full access, I am missing
checkboxes on advanced settings pages:
For example, on Folder Options - View: all settings are visible, but no
checkboxes.

Also Acrobat Reader 7's search page has no text - just a few checkboxes. I
first thought it was an AR problem, but no updates have repaired it.

The three systems all have one thing (that I can associate) in common - MS
..NET Framework 1.1 (installed with Sony Vegas 6). One is WinXP Pro SP2 (.net
has SP1), another is a laptop with XP Home, and the third is WinXP Pro, no
Service packs. Any ideas? This seems rather odd to me. Vegas' Media
Manager also is missing text for item entries until I rollover a line, then
it appears. This is what made me wonder if there is a tie in. Media Manager
shouldn't have any affect on WinXP's settings, and Sony didn't have a
solution for it (I seem to be the only Vegas user with missing MM text), so
that led me to think perhaps .NET Framework 1.1 might be an issue, somehow.

Also, the laptop is the internet PC - all are behind two routers, and the
laptop is running Norton Internet Security, as well as Windows Defender beta
2.

This isn't a showstopper problem, but I would like to have access back to
advanced settings, and if it solves the Acrobat search window problem too,
then superb.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Thanks for the reply - I believe I had already tried that, but ran it again.
No change (rebooted to be sure the reg setting was active). I have a
screenshot if it helps - the Advanced settings window isn't empty - just no
checkboxes to make selections. The same is true elsewhere, but I'll have to
dig a bit to remember where else I ran into this.

I see the same thing under System Properties-Advanced-Visual Effects. Custom
settings are there (Animate, three fade options, show shadows, etc), but no
way to select/deselect or tell which is active (no checkboxes).

I tried creating a new user account to be sure I had full admin on the
first, but it was the same, even if set for admin rights.

I should also add, that I just discovered that the "Learn About" files for
User Account editing ("Using a .NET Passport", "Switching Users"), etc all
have no text - a few graphics (e.g. Print this topic), but no text - just
like Acrobat Reader.

I'm guessing .NET 1.1 alters user account settings somehow. I've looked
through the .NET config and setup panels, but didn't see anything that seemed
related (or I just missed it).
