Net Framework 1.1

For nearly a year now, when I go to Microsoft to do the upgrades, I always
have gotten this message.
Installing Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 (update 1 of
2)...Failed.
All other upgrades installed correctly.
The computer is a new Sony laptop, WinXP Home, SP-2, all critical and secure
updates in place except it always says this one failed. Googled several like
topics, but not understanding what is happening to show it as failed.
Add/Remove programs show Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 as well as Microsoft
..NET Framework 1.1 (hotfix KB886904) have been installed, as well as
Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0. All upgrades download and install correctly,
and always have except Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1. It appears that it is
already here on the computer and is already installed, but Microsoft keeps
insisting that it needs to be installed. Sure would appreciate any comments
that might help other than "Google is your friend". Thanks.

I keep getting the same message and I also have a brand new computer(1 week
old) with everything authenticated and new on it. I don't understand it
either. I have also researched it and cannot find an answer. Hopefully we
will be able to find one here.

Hi, Great idea, and thanks, but the failed problem started as soon as I took
it out of the box and went to the Microsoft update center, so Net Framework
would have already been installed on the computer before any other updates
were installed.
Next problem would be that if a person did install the update listed in the
article below, "Then removed using Add/Remove programs" I don't think a
person could do what the article talks about. That may be what has happened.
At this point I am not going to get to concerned about it, it appears that
it is installed, but something on MS thinks that it is not installed. I just
would like to correct the problem.

OK, got it fixed. This may, or may not apply to your problem. What I did was
read this article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/899619/en-us
that was supplied to me in one of the reply's. On my system I went to
Add/Remove programs, and found that Hotfix-KB886904 had been installed. I
Removed it. I went to the MS Update site, and this time NetFrameWork did
install. I rebooted the computer, went right back to MS Update site, and it
said that the only update I needed was Hotfix-KB886903, so I updated that
file. Went back to MS Update, and all is current.
Again this may/maynot apply to your system. Big thanks to all that replied.
