Icons missing for Switch User and Log Off

My "Switch User" and "Log Off" buttons work fine but the icons
do not display. Instead, the icon area is solid grey.

If I click Start => Turn off computer
then the three buttons for "Stand By", "Turn Off", and
"Restart" are also solid grey. These buttons also work fine but
the icons themselves are missing.

I'm using a new PC with a new installation of XP Pro with SP2. The
mobo has 4 gig of ram.

I've enabled fast user switching.

Up until recently, these icons did appear on the screen and all was
normal.

I did install Net Framework 1.1 which is required by the Powerdesk
software my Matrox P650 video card uses. I read a post somewhere
suggesting that Net Framework 1.1 causes various user settings to be
changed. Something did in fact change some of my control panel
settings under Folder Options => View.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled the software and latest drivers for
my video card and monitor.

I have run various malware scans and my system appears clean.

Any suggestions?

Hi,

Yes, NF does change things. See if this helps:

Welcome to Windows Screen Appears When You Start Windows XP After You
Install the .NET Framework 1.1: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=827072

To correct:

1. Go to Start/Run and type in: control userpasswords2 and press ok.

2. On the Users tab, left click "your user name" then clear the Users Must
Enter A User Name And Password To Use This Computer check box and then click
OK.

3. In the Automatically Log On dialog box that appears, type the "user name
and password" for the account you want to be logged on each time you start
your computer.

Added note: (Alex MVP)

If you want to logon to one of the other users, hold down shift as the
system boots up.

Remove ASPNET from the Welcome Screen for Auto Logon (Line 352) Right hand

Kelly,

Thanks for taking time to reply. But....

1. I have already set up 3 users and I require passwords for logon.
Therefore I want the welcome screen to appear. The user icons on the
welcome screen display just fine. I am not having any probs with the
welcome screen

2. I previously installed SP1 for Net Framework 1.1
This did not solve my problem with the missing system icons

3. I tried Taskbar Repair Tool Plus. The only item that seemed like
it might be related to my prob was "Repair icon views" for the
taskbar. Alas, I ran this but no joy.

Any other suggestions?

Joseph
