What is the difference between using GD and using something like
NeatImage? Can't grain be considered a noise source? If I'm off in
my
thinking, would appreciate some clarification.

The Grain Dissolver functions by diffusing the lightsource. This will
reduce the apparent graininess by causing less relative scattering
than would be possible with more collimated light. So the signal
picked up by the scanner lens is cleaner, and a lower noise floor may
reveal more detail if it is recorded.

Neat Image does its magic after the graininess has already been
quantized. That quantization by itself will add its own (one half bit
worth of quantization) noise, so NI will have more difficulty to avoid
loss of fine detail when it analyses noise patterns in the highest
frequencies.
