At the moment I have three machines, two desktop and a recently
purchased Notebook. The two desktop machines have the licence's affixed
to the side of the machines and both have a full XP Home installation
disk.

The Notebook came with XP Home pre-installed, the licence number fixed
to the bottom, and instructions on how to make a recovery disk. If I
wanted to do a clean install of the OS on the notebook, could I use one
of the disks from the other machine, and then type in the licence number
that is on the bottom of the Notebook?

Hi Mike,

Probably, but the biggest issue is driver support. The laptop will likely
require specific drivers and your best chance of getting a proper recovery
set is to use the system provided you by the laptop manufacturer.

No. The OEM Product Key affixed to the computer is
only valid with the computer manufacturer's method
of restoring Windows XP.

In many cases, as long as the OEM software is from the same vendor, the
OEM install CD's will work with the key you have on the laptop. As an
example, a Dell OEM Windows XP Prof CD from an Optiplex will allow you
to use your Dell laptop key to install on the laptop with that Optiplex
CD. If you were to use an HP key with the Dell OEM CD, it's almost a
sure bet that it won't work.

There is no difference in the XP CD from one Dell to another Dell, in
most cases, it's just that you need to be sure to use your proper key.

A: No , unfortunately.
It is made to require only that CD and the code comes up with the special
Recovery CD.And that's why I suggest to keep very well that Recovery CD in
case you need it.

I think this way is stupid and harder for most people and would be better
new computers to come with Normal Windows OEM CD not "Recovery junk".
