I have an OEM version of MS Windows XP Professional, and
am trying to get the hotfix to resolve the problem
described in KB 831938, "My Computer and Windows Explorer
unexpectedly quit when you try to open My Network Places
or Shared Documents in Windows XP"

I contacted my OEM vendor (HP), who said they did not
have access to the hotfix to resolve the problem. When I
attempt to contact MS to get the hotfix, I get refused
because I have an OEM version of MS Windows XP.

Is there a "magic" way to get this hotfix? :) Other
than wait for it to be released in SP2?

Thanks so much,
sashaw

You can go to microsoft's KB website and if there is a fix
for a certain problem, on the right hand side, there is a
menu. There should be an option to download the KB.exe
which will fix your computer and if not, they should give
instructions on how to fix it.

Yes, my problem is that MS won't deal with me directly
because I have an OEM version of XP. My vendor is lame
and trying to convince me that MS won't deal with them
either.

I'm looking for suggestions on how to get the hotfix. HP
told me to do a repair on my OS using the original CD's.
Um, my understanding is that this will definately not
resolve my issue. Can someone please let me know if I am
incorrect?

Thanks,
sashaw

If you call MS Support and *immediately* say you want the hotfix for
xxxxxx because you are experiencing the specific problem, you should
get it - and not be charged
