Manual Updates..

J

JD

Seems as though one of the earlier updates has changed my update. When I
click on Start, Windows Update, I get an error on the Windows update web
page.

I have my updates set as manual and it wants me to change to Automatic
but I don't want to do that since I do not want IE7 to be automatically
installed.

What do I change to get updates manually, where I choose which updates
to install? It used to work set on manual.

In Start, Control Panel, Automatic Updates I have Automatic
not checked and have checked "Notify me but don't
automatically download or install". When notified I always
commence the process by selecting Start, Help and Support,
Keep your computer up-to-date with Windows Update and opt
for a Custom install.

The system then check on you and then your system to see
what you need. At the end of this stage under Select by Type
will be the number of Updates available by category. Click on
Critical and it will list the details of those available. Check the
option for each and every one and then click on Install. You
will then be offered the option to Save to Disk or to Run.
Select Run. The process is then fully automated until it
says hopefully Successful or Finished. You then restart the
machine.

If you click on the + sign before an update to see the details
you can check a box before "Don't show me this update again".
There is all a link in the listing on the left to "Restore hidden
updates" if you change your mind.

When does it notify you? At Windows Startup or randomly? I ask because I
set it that way and I still got the error at the update page.

J

JD

I tried what you said and when I get to Keep your computer up to date,
etc. I get the same error on the update page.

I was able to select updates from the shield in the task bar but I still
can't use the update page.

I get an error on the Windows update web page

What is the error and error number?

Usually not long after making my first internet connection in the
morning. The icon will suddenly appear with a balloon in the
Notification area of the Task Bar. I invariably tell it later and the
icon stays there until I have visited Windows Update

As your other respondent has asked what exactly is the error
message you are seeing? You can presumably force the error
message to appear by revisiting the scene of the crime.

Nothing I did changed the update. So I enabled AutoUpdate and started
BITS (I had that disabled) and then it worked and I got the updates
using the Custom feature.

Then I disabled AutoUpdate and stopped BITS and tried again and it still
worked. Don't have a clue but I now have notes if it happens again.

Thanks for your help.

Have you looked at the detail in the WindowsUpdate.log
located in your Windows folder?

Didn't know I had one of those. I'm looking at it. What am I looking
for? I can see where the updates started today.

When this all started, I had AutoUpdates and BITS disabled. I used
Start, Update Windows and got to the update page which loaded and then
said "the site cannot continue because one or more of these Windows
services is not running:

It ask that I enable AutoUpdates, BITS and Event Log. Event Log was on
automatic so I started the other two. Reloaded the page with same error.

In the upper right corner of the page, it had Error Number: 0x8DDD0018

I looked up that error number and it is the same instructions I received
on the update web page.

The only way I got it to work was to enable AutoUpdates and BITS. In the
first attempt I started them from Start, Run: services.msc. It was only
successful when I used Control Panel to enable AutoUpdate.

But then I reset AutoUpdates and BITS to disabled and tried the update
page again and it worked. Keep in mind I'm not doing AutoUpdates, I'm
trying for manual updates. The only thing I noticed in the process was
it did update some Active-X component?

I have updated XP before with AutoUpdates and BITS disabled so I'm not
sure why it didn't work and then it did work. I kept notes so I'll know
how to deal with it next time. It's just more funk from XP?

BITS startup type should be set to Manual not Disabled,

Information about your Error Code:
You may receive an error message that contains the "0x8DDD0018"
code or the "0x80246008" code when you try to download updates
from the Microsoft Windows Update Web site or from the Microsoft
Update Web site

Try leaving AutoUpdates and BITS enabled. They will not be used unless you
are checking for updates so it hurts nothing to do this. I may be
remembering incorrectly but I believe the newer versions of the Windows
Update site are what requires them to be enabled.

Also check your date/time as I've seen Windows update fail when these are
not correct.

Keep in mind that I have done more updates with BITS and AutoUpdate
disabled so it was a MS web page problem?

I turned off services based on this web page:

http://www.jasonn.com/turning_off_unnecessary_services_on_windows_xp

Manual updates should work with AutoUpdate and BITS disabled. It did
last week and it finally did yesterday.

Whats the difference between Manual and Disabled? If BITS is disabled
can I still go in and Start it?

Automatic Updates. It will be used since it has a setting on when to
check for updates. No thanks! My computer is not always connected to the
internet so I don't need MS shoveling updates down my throat at some
pre-set time. I can take a look at the potential updates and take the
ones I need.

I've read in either this newsgroup or another MS newsgroup that the
update to IE7 was one of MS's "critical updates"? With AutoUpdates
enabled, IE7 gets installed. No thanks! I use IE6 to get updates and
that is it. I use a more secure web browser for everything else.

I will check the date and time next time I boot XP.

This is what I suggested in my first reply to you. It will not give
you the grief you are trying to avoid.

Three options are available for the Startup type of any particular
Service, selectable using the drop-down menu, each having it's
own particular advantages or disadvantages.

Automatic. When this is selected the Service in question will
automatically be started when loading Windows XP. This can
increase booting time slightly, although some Services must
be set to this to ensure correct running of XP, e.g. Remote
Procedure Call (RPC). Some Services will also get started
due to dependencies (Or because they are required) & it's
best to set these to Automatic as well - this can improve
overall performance as well slightly given that once loaded
during startup they will not be required to do so again.

Manual. This option allows the Service in question to load
upon request. This works well for most Services - saving
resources & reducing boot time as they aren't loaded until
required, although not all Services function well like this,
e.g. Print Spooler or Protected Storage. System
performance may be slightly reduced while a Service is
being initiated also.

Disabled. With this option selected the Service in question
cannot be loaded, even if requested. This option is most
useful for Security purposes only & for most Services
where you would have the option of selecting Manual or
Disabled it would be best to go with Manual.

JD, I leave the service enabled but have AutoUpdate set to notify me if new
updates are allowed. It's not allowed to download or install anything
without my OK. I'm not happy about IE7 eventually being shoved down the
pipes either so understand your concern...

Gerry..

Thanks for the explanation regarding the difference between Auto, Manual
and Disable.

I tried the updates as Notify but I didn't like the way it worked. Maybe
I can get used to it.

Do you see any problem with the following services set as Disabled:

Alerter
Application Layer Gateway Services
ClipBook
Computer Browser
Cryptographic Services
Distributed Transaction Coordinator
Error Reporting Service
Messenger
Netmeeting REmote Desktop Sharing
Remote Desktop Help Session Manager
Remote Registry
Terminal Services
Uninterruptible Power Supply
(I use an UPS but it doesn't have the capacity to manage the system)
Upload Manager
Windows Time
Workstation

I tried it that way and didn't really like the way it worked but maybe I
can get used to it? I haven't booted to XP today so I couldn't check the
date and time.
