Can't use Windows Update on XP

C

Charles W Dvis

Windows XP SP3, with no subsequent updates.

IE7 locks up when attempting Windows Update.
Loaded MalwareBytes from my USB drive. It was unable to get updates for its
files. In its vanilla state, no bad guys.
Created an IE7 short cut. Was able to get to the internet. Tried Windows
Update again, IE7 locks up.
Opened IE7, downloaded and installed Microsoft Update. No change.
Downloaded and installed Windows Genuine Advantage Utility. No change.
Downloaded and installed Windows Defender. It can't update.
Downloaded and installed Firefox. Here I can access anything, except Windows
Update.
Downloaded and installed IE8. No help.

Any thoughts will be appreciated.

Open internet options, settings, view objects,R.click on all the icons (one
at a
time),select "update"...Windows & microsoft update rely on these for the
updater service to work..

Hi:

Go to Add/Remove Programs and check to see if you have Google Toolbar,
Yahoo Toolbar, or any other Toolbars installed. If so, turn off Automatic
Updates and then uninstall all of them. In addition, if you have Google
Updater installed then uninstall it also.

After you have uninstalled items referenced above then run a manual
Windows Updates prior to turning back on Automatic Updates.

Hi Charles:

Open your Internet Explorer>Help>About Internet Explorer and post back
what version of IE that you currently have. If it's IE7 and version other
than 7.0.5730.13 then you have a "Branded Internet Explorer" and AFTER you
uninstall all the Toolbars etc you will need to reinstall IE7 BEFORE you
will be able to get any Windows Updates.

Post back your findings and I can direct you with specific instructions on
how to reinstall IE7 etc if need be.

I have the ATT Yahoo Browser that does let me access the windows update. I
have the SP3 and IE 8 with all updates. Running Windows XP Media Center from
Dell. Dell is NO HELP. I can access the internet through Firefox 2 and the
ATT Browser 5.04.02.09. IE 8 won't diagnose the problem just sends me to
http://support.microsoft.com/winxp. Cleared Winsock Catalog errors, but I
think there's still a registry problem. Custom browser from your ISP may
work....

Hi Linda:

I upgraded from IE7 to IE8 and had all kinds of problems and finally had
to restore back to IE7 to get functionality of my computers back. IE8 still
has all kinds of bugs in it.

Hopefully you have read my postings above related to IE Toolbars and if
you have any I suggest that you also uninstall all of them. They could be
branding your IE, as they were especially bad about blocking the update from
IE 7.0.5730.11 to IE 7.0.5730.13. Once they blocked this upgrade then you
would no longer receive any Windows Updates related to IE7.

Also you might consider downloading, installing and running User Profile
Hive Cleanup Service from
