I have lost my windows address book *.wab file. How can I get it back? Do
I have to do a repair load of Windows XP?

Hello Sawdust46,

Repair console is for the XP system itself. How did you lost it? Deleted
by yourself or someone else is the only option i know to "loose" something.
Or did you have a hardware crash before?

Best regards

The file got corrupted for some reason. I was looking at my addresses with
no problem. Then I tried looking again and it could no longer access the
file. After trying a number of things with no luck, I deleted it thinking I
could reload it.. Now that it is gone, I have tried locating it and
reloading accessories. No luck. It is gone. Anyway to get it back?

Open the Recycle Bin and restore the file.

After you've recovered the file, think about backing up your
OE files. Every week. To an external medium, e.g. a 2.5"
disk in a USB case. Then test your backup to ensure that
it would really work when you need it.

In c:\documents and settings\<user>\Application data\microsoft\address
book you should see a backup file called <user>.wab~ or <user>.wa~.

Rename the file to <user>.wab

Under Microsoft there is only internet explorer folder with nothing in it.
I went to my other laptop and copied the wab.exe file to the outlook express
file. Still no luck.
I get a message that is cannot access the windows address book file..

I managed to copy the address book files from my wife's computer. This
allowed me to open the address book where the existing files were there but
must have been corrupt since they would not open the book.

In WindowsXP, the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default marked as
hidden. To view these files in Windows Explorer, you must enable Show Hidden
Files and Folders under Start > Control Panel > Folder Options > View.

(All about) Address Book
http://www.insideoe.com/files/wab.htm

Try searching in Explorer (WinKey+F) for "*.wab*" (w/out the quotes) > What
is found?

WAB files are not normally put in the OE folder. You need to find out
where your wab file is. Do a search of all files, including hidden &
system files, for file type *.wab and see if the ~ file is there, if
so, change it's name <user>.wab~ or <user>.wa~.

If all is well and OE is open, CTRL+Shift+B will open the Address Book
associated with the identity in use.

Address Book Help > About will reveal its location.

Useful information, thank you.
