Lost DISC CLEANUP ability

T

Thomas

Problem: I was using the %TEMP% function after installing a new AGP graphics
card driver and it would appear I deleted a registry instruction for DISC
CLEAN UP under System Tools. The DISC Clean Up won't compress old files and
proceed to the usual clean-up functions. I ran the MSFT One Care SAFETY
SCANNER and it also stalled trying to do the DISC CLEAN UP. How can I get
this function back working? Thank you!

I'm not sure what you mean, %temp% is not a function it's an enviroment
variable, it simply points to the folder where the user's temporary
files are stored. I don't know how using this variable could have
possibly deleted registry entries. Try the following and see if it
fixes things:

The Disk Cleanup tool in Windows 2000 stops responding while it scans
old files for compression

JJ: Thank you. I realize it is a "function". Not sure WHY if not the
registry key was deleted it just stopped compressing. Your suggestion will
be taken. I also found a nifty free utility in TechNet {www.wisecleaner.com}
that may pick up the stalled compression. I appreciate your help.

I would strongle advise that you not use a registry cleaner! These
things do more harm than good!

John: Your follow-up is appreciated. I do not know how the compression
corruption occured. I assumed a string that was in the %temp% folder that I
too-quickly deleted was what caused the malfunction in the Disk Clean Up.
The Wise Disk Cleaner 2 free utility was mentioned in TechNet magazine a
month ago. I was unaware that EITHER the Windows Disk Clean Up or the Wise
Disk Cleaner 2 utility actually CLEANED THE REGISTRY. I will have to educate
myself on these functions and folders and utilities. E.G., it is not clear
WHAT ends up in the %temp% folder much less other temporary files such as
those used to install programs and apps.

A review of the item was found in the TechNet Toolbox [New Products
for IT Professionals] in either the November or October TechNet Mag. I have
been using it now for almost a week. It is superior, as far as I can tell,
to the native Disk Cleanup because it does all it does, and more. So far, so
good. Free, too.
Thanks again for your assistance.
