Lanmanserver does not start - Setting is Automatic

I have two Win XP Pro SP2 computers on a local network with a workgroup in
common. Browsing each other computer with Windows Explorer - My Network
Places - Entire Network - Microsoft Windows Network - "Workgroup" -
"Computername" - "Volumes, directories and files" and working with these has
worked both ways. Not any more - just one way!
The browser message is "\\Computername is not accessible. You might not have
permission to use this network resource. ..... The remote server has been
paused or is in the process of being started."
I have on the not accessible computer checked the Event Viewer - System
information: "Event ID 7000 -The PMEM service failed to start due to: The
file Name, directroy name, or volume label syntax is incorrect". What is PMEM?
The Help and Support link states in Version 5.0 and 5.2 (two versions???):
"The%1 service failed to start due to the following error: %2". Suggestions
and my comments are:
1. Expired password - NO
2. Verify service location - It's there.
3. Virus - Latest Norton is always present.
4. Display the WIN32_EXIT_CODE error by "sc query Lanmanserver" - Error code
is 0. If the code is 0, then SCM Service Control Manger did not attempt to
start the service because the error was detected first".
However, The "Server or lanmanserver" service is Paused after booting. As
soon as it is manually Resumed everything is up working normal. The
configuration is set Automatic and all the rest is equivalent to the other
computers service settings.
Checking, turning off Windows/Zonelabs Firewall and rebooting doesn't help.
Still I have a guts feeling one of them or an earlier Norton firewall has had
a damaging impact.
But, why does not Server start up automatically?
Is there any hope??? I don't know what to do from here,

My guess would be that your DNS is timing out. Setting static IP for the
TCP/IP properties of the NIC cards might speed up the connect, and allow
lanman to succeed.

Hey Mark,
Th computer is on a static IP address.
I'm not sure about how you think here. Is it that a browser request from one
computer to an other in the same Workgroup will trigger the latter to start
the Server (lanmanserver)?

What I notice is that the browser on the former hangs for a while when I
want to open the Network Connections - - - Workgroup. Then there is the
message about the latter computer having paused alternatively I don't have
the permission.

However, what it all is about is that the Server does not start when the
latter computer starts up. It does start on other computers so my question is
what fails/is missing upt to the start order. When I manually starts, it
everything is OK, as it should be from the very beginning.

Best regards,
Björn

I am suspecting DNS failure. are you seeing a Default Gateway in the reply
to IPCONFIG (from a command prompt)?

If DNS fails: restart windows, after you go to start/run, and type CMD, then
at that prompt type: IPCONFIG /flushDNS and then : IPCONFIG /registerDNS

Hey Mark,
IPCONFIG shows just what it should.
As I see it now - there are two possible causes for finding Server
(lanmanseerver) paused after starting-up (if things are not more complex):
either Server never is started or it it shut down after being started. I can
not judge on which. All settings in Services and MSConfig are for a standard
take off - just as on the other computers.
So where is the settings to be found which are not normal or how to track
down failing proceedures or files?
Mark, please have a go on this as I know there are more people than me
having this problem.
Best regards,
Björn

Hey Mark,

Took some time to do all your suggestions. Got any more?

Everything looks/works/reports/... as espected except for the Lanmanserver
which is paused after start up. All registry settings for "lanmanserver" is
identical to other computer's. In Service the setting is Automatic. In
MSconfig it is set to start.

I see that other people have this problem but none of their solutions work
here.

There are one or two question not answered here:
* What settings in the registry can be missing or stop lanmanserver from
starting?
* If started what pauses lanmanserver?
* Can CSConfigFlags settings in Register have an influence?

Can you give or guide me to those answers?

Best regards,
Björn

I think a repair is next. First try:

To repair all system files, go to Start/Run, and type: SFC /SCANNOW

If no help:

If you run an XP "Upgrade"setup, from the original, or "Gold" version of the
setup CD, and you have SP2 installed, it will go into a setup loop, and you
will lose your install. Uninstall SP2, BEFORE you do a Upgrade setup from CD
(that lacks sp2 on it.)

Perform a Repair/Upgrade Installation:

Mark,
Belive it or not - I found an IBM driver causing Server to pause. Still do
not know why but that I'll sort out later.
Thanks your support,
Björn

Björn,

Have you been able to verify that the Server service Pause state is
being caused by an IBM driver, and if so, where you able to fix that? I
have that exact same problem on an IBM Thinkpad T42p, however, it just
works fine on an IBM Thinkpad T40??!!??
Any suggestions are very much appreciated!
Thanks,
Wolfgang

Hi Wolfgang,

Have you checked the Event Log for Service failure messages?

Hi !!

Did anyone find a solution. I also have a T42p with exactly the same
problem. The Server Service is paused after boot and to have network
connections I need to resume it manually. I am shure it is an IBM
driver but don't know which one and how to fix it...

I also have the same problem on a T42p. Please post a reply to the
group or email me privately if you find a solution.
