Service "Server" pauses after start-up

G

Guest

I have two Win XP Pro SP2 computers on a local network with a workgroup in
common. Browsing each other computer with Windows Explorer - My Network
Places - Entire Network - Microsoft Windows Network - "Workgroup" -
"Computername" - "Volumes, directories and files" and working with these has
worked both ways. Not any more - just one way!
The browser message is "\\Computername is not accessible. You might not have
permission to use this network resource. ..... The remote server has been
paused or is in the process of being started."
I have on the not accessible computer checked the Event Viewer - System
information: "Event ID 7000 -The PMEM service failed to start due to: The
file Name, directroy name, or volume label syntax is incorrect". What is PMEM?
The Help and Support link states in Version 5.0 and 5.2 (two versions???):
"The%1 service failed to start due to the following error: %2". Suggestions
and my comments are:
1. Expired password - NO
2. Verify service location - It's there.
3. Virus - Latest Norton is always present.
4. Display the WIN32_EXIT_CODE error by "sc query Lanmanserver" - Error code
is 0. If the code is 0, then SCM Service Control Manger did not attempt to
start the service because the error was detected first".
However, The "Server or lanmanserver" service is Paused after booting. As
soon as it is manually Resumed everything is up working normal. The
configuration is set Automatic and all the rest is equivalent to the other
computers service settings.
Checking, turning off Windows/Zonelabs Firewall and rebooting doesn't help.
Still I have a guts feeling one of them or an earlier Norton firewall has had
a damaging impact.
But, why does not Server start up automatically?
Is there any hope??? I don't know what to do from here,
Björn

Hey Nordwall,

PMEM belongs to a IBM service. I found to fixes to it, you may wish to
follow-up with IBM if you need additional help on it.

Fix #1
Check out the URL below :
http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/win2000/r1069687493

Fix #2

CAUSE
Potentially an IBM service that is no longer needed in the Windows XP
operating
system

RESOLUTION
STEP 1
Open the registry editor (START, RUN, Type REGEDIT)
Backup and rename the following key HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services
\PMEM\
(May be in a HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services \PMEM\ key)

STEP 2
Searched the hard drive for the file PMEMNT.SYS
Rename this file from PMEMNT.SYS to PMEMNT.old
(C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\pmemnt.sys)

STEP 3
Open the Event Log, (START, Control Pannel, Administrative Tool, Event
Viewer)
Right click the System log and choose Clear Log, then save the log if you
wish.
Reboot

I hope this helps.

You are right Craig about the IBM PMEM service. You pointed at:

Fix #1
Check out the URL below :
http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/win2000/r1069687493

"open regedit browse to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\PMEM\ you got a key
labelled ImagePath, edit it and change the value to
"system32\drivers\PMEMNT.SYS" then open a command prompt and type "net start
pmem" if the modification if ok the service will start and u won't be annoyed
anymore."

I have applied the fix.

I'll find out later if this fix solved the problem not just for the moment.

Trying to learn something here - WHERE/HOW DID YOU COME ACROSS THIS FIX?

Best regards,
Björn

I used Google with the keywords : pmem 7000

... and the 2nd hit is what I gave you for Fix#1.

Fix #2 came from my own internal resources which has worked successfully.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Your Fix #2 - Resolution, STEP 1 is not clear: rename to what?

Checking my files I find C:\Windows\System32\drivers\PMEMNT.SYS.
A PMEM.SYS is not present.

Best regards,
Björn

Sorry Craig,

Still the same problem: Server is paused after start up!
Somebody is trying to start PMEMNT.SYS which is in System32\driver. The Reg
setting for PMEMNT in CurrentControlSet points to that file. Still System
Event reports ID 7000: ... service failed ... cannot find the file. There is
a small difference in this message after making the change in ImagePath from
\??\C:\Windows\System32\drivers\PMEMNT.SYS to System32\drivers\PMEMNT.SYS.
Cannot find PMEMNT in MsConfig Services. I don't think this is connected to
the Server problem.

Anyhow, the Server is paused after start-up! Service setting is Automatic.

Who pauses Service or never turns it on? Server is running on other machines
and all lanmanserver Reg-settings look the same.

Has security settings anything to do with this?

Can this be tracked somehow?

I don't want to give up yet.
Best regards
Björn

For step#1, just rename the PMEM folder to anything you like.
ie PMEMa

Yes, as per STEP 2 - rename this file from PMEMNT.SYS to PMEMNT.old . Im
not sure where you seen PMEM.SYS. Let me know if I overlooked this one.

Thanks
