I have what appears to be the same problem. I have just completely
re-installed Win XP SP2 on my system, starting with a blank drive. I have
added most of my common programs, all programs I used before on WinXP SP1.
Now I find that in Network Connections, my LAN shows properly, but my
internet connection either does not show or shows as disabled, even though I
have internet access. As well, the icons in the tray do not display.
I have shut down both my cable modem and my router, and restarted them. This
restored a lost inernet access, but did not restore the Network Connections
or icons.
I would very much appreciate help, as there are times I want to be able to
disable my internet connection (for example, when I need to turn off my
antivirus to install or update a program). Rebooting does not disable my
internet access.
