Unable to disconnect Internet connecton from client computer using

I am running a HCL desktop and an IBM laptop over a crossover cable LAN
connection, both having XP Home SP2. The server(desktop) uses a USB ADSL
modem for a dialup broadband connection and the connection is ICS enabled.
Now when i boot the laptop(client), it shows the icon for the shared internet
connection in the Network Connections folder. When i double click it, the
connection is established. The problem starts whenever i try to disconnect it
from the client. It shows a msg: Error Disconnecting: It is not possible to
disconnect at this time. The connection is busy with a connect or disconnect
operation. After a few unsuccessful tries, the icon for the shared connection
just vanishes from the Network Connection folder although the internet
connection remains on. My only choice then is to go to the server desktop and
disconnect the connection. I have static IP of 192.168.0.... range assigned
to both the machines and all necessary firewall ports are configured.
One more observation: The event log shows a DNS registration failure of the
network adapter at startup. I have used MSHOME.NET as dns suffix in the
client machine. is there a corresponding setting to be done on the host
machine as well? i am not sure
can anyone solve this for me?

My recollection is that you need to run the second machine as a DHCP
client and let it get all its IP settings from the DHCP server, i.e.
the desktop PC. The MS home network wizard usually does all this quite
effectively. Also, you can right click the network connection in the
desktop ->select properties and tick a box that allows other computers
to disconnect from the internet. If you're suitably firewalled, though,
you may aswell just leave it on :)

I don't know why you can't disable the host's connection from the
client, but I don't think that the DNS registration failure has
anything to do with it.

Here's a possible work-around for the problem: Install Remote
Disconnect Utility on both computers, which will let you hang up the
host's connection from the client:
