ISDN interferes with Netword Adapters

Hello,
I am trying to set up a Toshiba S3000-214 Model PS320E-022FM-GR to work
with my DSL service (Verizon) via a router. This machine has two built in
network adapters: a Eumex 540PC SE which is controlled via HomeNet Control
and a Realtek RTL8139 PCI adapter which appears to be on the motherboard.
There is only one RJ-45 jack on the back which I'm assuming to be associated
with the Realtek card. All along I'm getting an error that refers to some
ISDN connection but it gives Error 3. When I click on this connection, I see
a 64.0 kBit/s connection and packets going out but no packets coming in.
When I stick an ethernet cable into the RJ-45 jack on the back, the
connection remains is ex'ed-out and I can't ping the router. Today I tried
using a Linsys EtherFast 10/100 PCMCIA card in the side slot. The machine
recognized the car but again the connection remains ex'ed-out and I can't
ping the router.

I am somewhat perplexed by all this. Is the ISDN trying to set itself up
as the primary Internet connection to the exclusion of all others? I tried
deactivating it but the other two connections still remained inactive and
ex'ed-out. The ISDN connection is preconfigured with a fixed IP address of
192.168.47.11, subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 and a standard gateway
192.168.47.12 whcih tells me that it was set up to access some local home
gateway. What I need to do is find a way to reset this such that it can hit
my router and use that as a gateway through which could then pick up a
dynamically assigned IP address.

Would anyone have any ideas how to get this to work? I turned off the
Eumex in the HM but with equally dismal results. All NICs appeared to be up
and running in the DM but both the Linksys and the Realtek can't seem to be
able to find the router whereas the Eumex tells me that the Router
connection could not be esablished even though I can't really see how it
could be (is this the IR port?). Aby advice on this would be most gratefully
appreciated. Thanks.

Regards, John

I did a search on the Toshiba site and did not find the exact model of
computer that you list. may be my error. the nearest that I found appeared
to be a Satellite 3000 that showed only one network adapter. If you are
showing two in software but only one hardware (physical)outlet then I
strongly suspect that you have "something wrong" in the software set up.
If, as I suspect from my search of the Toshiba site you have the portable
then it is likely you have a PCI card? I believe that you need to find out
what hardware you really have connected and then make sure step by step that
it has the correst drivers.

ISDN is a completely different set up to DSL and can use either an interal
card or an external device, vice a modem. If you do not know about the ISDN
installation then I suspect that it is causing you some troubles and "may"
need to be removed before you can make progress. Clearly your PC "thinks"
it has some form of ISDN device with which it trying to establish a dialog,
sadly it has a monalog at the moment as it sends but does not get a reply.
A web search suggests that the Eumex is either a serial port device or a USB
device and probably an ISDN adapter, I suspect that this is no longer
available though my research suggest that you should get an error message.

What is the history of the PC? Have you always used it/owened it or did you
buy it or obtain it from a previous user where it had a previous life?
If it has been used elsewhere before, I think that you need to clean out the
old connections and then start again to give your self a known install base.
Your internet connection should now be be via a network connection not a
dial up connection this "may" then allow you to connect to the router. You
will have to plug in the correct cable between the PC and the router. Once
this is all done, do you know your router's address? It might be
198.162.0.1. Then you can start trying to enter the next phase of the set
up.

Good luck
Richard
