Is it possible to cleanly uninstall Norton Systemworks Pro 2003

Rather than pay a renewal/upgrade fee to continue using Symantec
SystemWorks Pro I want to uninstall it and switch to Trend Micro
PCcillin Internet Security 2005.

I remember trying an uninstall on one of my other computers. It was not
completely successful in removing the product. In fact, if I recall I
ended up having to restore a ghost image of the drive.

I noticed Symantec has all kinds of detailed procedures for a manual
uninstall. Apparently they know the Windows add/remove process doesn't
do a complete job of it.

If you were able to successfully uninstall Systemworks Pro 2003 what
procedure did you follow? A Windows uninstall followed by a manual
cleanup?

What order did you remove the products? There are several items in
add/remove in addition to the SystemWorks product (I.e. LiveUpdate).

Any info you can provide on successfully removing Symantec SystemWorks
Pro 2003 would be appreciated.

First, I downloaded the free version of Avg,
(Here unplug your internet connection)
Then, I uninstalled Norton’s Virus scanner
I rebooted normally
Then, I uninstalled Norton’s Live Reg*
I rebooted normally
Then I rebooted into safe mode.
In the registry
Delete either the value or the key for either Norton’s and/or Symantec
Now search for folders name Symantec and/or Norton’s and delete them
Reboot Normally

*Don’t uninstall if you keeping some of the Norton stuff.

Go to www.symantec.com and they have the exact procedure you need
to uninstall NS apps...

Duh, I was just point out some extra steps that symantec does not do
or tell you. He said he would it totally gone. By the way my
method does work.

To wgd. Trendmicro may also have renewal fees,
That I why I suggested using Avg 7 free

What extra steps? The symantec method at least matched
your steps, with the details on "how" to do them explained.
The booting into "safe" mode was good advice, I agree, but
not totally necessary. At least when I followed Symantec's
steps worked for me without the safe mode booting. But
like I said, not a bad idea at all.

The Norton uninstall works quite well if you first of all turn off all the NAV
functions. To do this, go into <regedit> and delete all the Norton programs
that auto start from HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
Then go into <services.msc> from Run and change all the Norton services from
automatic to manual. Once you reboot, there shouldn't be any Norton programs
running, and at that point NAV should uninstall properly. At least it did on 3
XP SP2 machines that I cleaned up recently. And what a difference it makes on
login time without all those services running.

Thanks, that sounds like good advice. I'll give your procedure a try on
my backup XP SP2 machine first.

Thanks for info Greg. I will keep for ref next time I do a Norton upgrade.
For the past few years it seems that each time I upgrade to the latest
version of System works Norton screws up the process of upgrading it's own
software.
