I'm trying to help an elderly lady with a computer problem with ther internet
explorer. She just recently started to have error messages generating as she
turns on her computer. The message reoccures every minute or so. I can't
access her desktop or activate the start drop down menu. I can access the
internet though and I tried to down load patches from microsoft to no avail.
Does this problem sound familuar to anyone? If so, how can I fix it for her.
Thank you in advance.

It would be really HARD to pin down without knowing what the error
messages say. Make sure you include the text from the error popup
window's title bar.

Have you tried booting the system in safe mode?

What version of Windows is running on the computer?

What provisions (CD or hidden partition) are available for reinstalling
the operating system? Sometime you have a choice between the uncertainty
of determining which odd file needs replacing or just starting with a
clean operating system installation. Make sure you have the product key!

Thank you for your replies. Please forgive me for my lack of info to include
but thats part of the problem, I can't acess her desktop or programs at all.
The computer is just unresponsive. Soon after the error message appears the
tool bar and icons disappear for a moment and then come back up. For that
monment you just see the apprearance of the desktop picture.

The info that was under the tech info was
AppName: explorer.exe
AppVer: 6.0.2800.1106
ModVer: 5.1.2600.1634
Offset:000cdc7
ModName: User32.dll

Again, please forgive me for my ignorance. Just try to see what would be the
best approach to help her. Thank you.
