Intellimouse

I have a Sony Vaio PCG-V505AP Notebook, with a Touchpad
and Alps Film Pointing Device and originally a Microsoft
Intellimouse, now a Belkin wireless mouse. Both external
mouse devices eventually go "haywire" while I am using
the notebook, moving randomly around the screen, opening
or shutting other programs and windows. Initally, they
operate properly, but eventually they become totally
erratic. I previously found a Microsoft download patch
for a similar problem, but for a differnt Sony model, and
hence would not load onto my notebook. This patch
designated the problem as incompatibility between a
Windows XP driver and the external mouse (driver), but
now I can not find any related downloads or fixes. Any
suggestions or solutions would be appreciated.

MS suggests that the root cause is that wheel mouses transmit 4bit
packets and touchpads transmit 3 bit packets, the 4th bit for the wheel.
If the touchpad and external mouse are both operating XP supposedly can
misinterpret the 4th bit as the first bit of the touchpad packet, so the
cursor goes bananas.

I have a degenerating external mouse problem similar to yours. The
external mouse has been running flawlessly for a year, and suddenly it
now has become erratic. It could be deterioration in the mouse itself.
I am suspicious that the mouse does not behave badly on two other
laptops both running XP with touchpads. Turning off the touchpad on the
problem computer does not correct the problem. Frankly, I think this is
an XP problem that MS needs to research and fix.

This post prompted me to install Intellipoint 5 even though I do not
have an Intellipoint currently installed. The installer needed to
remove the touchpad driver. After the install I reinstalled the
touchpad driver. Now the erratic cursor seems to have been stamped out.
I might have installed the touchpad only to see if that corrected the
whacked out cursor, but, alas, my diagnostic plan dictated otherwise.
