Installing XP Pro

Problem Description: I am trying to upgrade from XP Home to XP Professional.

There is a green button at "Preparing installation." "Installing Windows" is
highlighted in red.

There is a window that is titled "Fatal Error." It says, "An error has been
encountered that prevents Setup from continuing. One of the components that
Windows needs to continue setup could not be installed. The request could not
be performed because of an I/O device error. Press OK to view the Setup log
file."

The "System Setup Log - (C:\Windows\setuperr.log)" window says, "Error:
Installation Failed: D:\l386\asms. Error Message: The request could not be
performed because of an I/O device error.

I can't continue installing or escape from setup even if I turn off the
computer.

What can I do?

Clean install.

Do you mean start over? If so, it won't let me. It keeps going back to that
part of Setup--It says 39 minutes....
Thanks

Download the floppies for your hard disk using another computer from your
hard disk manufacturer's web site. Put the first one if there are two for
your hard disk in your floppy drive and boot to the floppy. Follow the
instructions to format and partition your hard drive. Then boot into your
bios and set them to boot from your CD drive, reboot and install XP.

You will lose all your data but you will have a "clean install".

How about forgetting XP Pro and just going back to Home? Can I just back out
of or Remove the part of XP Pro that is there?

Back up is a computer user's best friend. You might be able to put it on
another computer as a slave drive and move the data to that computer's hard
drive but I doubt it.
