I'm trying to load xp pro when I get to the installing windows portion. I
get this error.
Installation failed:D\I:386\asms. Error message. The request could not be
performed because of an I/O device error.

Fatal Error:
one of the components that windows needs to continue setup could not be
installed

the request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.

How do I find out which device is the problem to fix it?

You must have other hds installed when installing xp,or several partitions
still active on the drive. The reason,xp should install as C: not D: as you
list,
remove other hds and/or delete partitions on drive or set as raw space, you
can then reformat them in xp after its installed.

Hey doofus, D is the CD drive and the error message is usually associated
with a bad copy of the CD.

I'm having a similar problem. I'm not sure how to address this:

I'm reformatting/installing onto a clean system. I disconnected all IDE
devices except my primary HD on the primary IDE channel, and my CD drive,
connected to my secondary IDE. Reformatted the HD, then when I try to
install, I get this message:

D:\I386\asms. Error Message:
The volume for a file has been externally altered so taht the opened file is
no longer valid.

I have no idea what to do with this. I thought that I might have a corrupt
HD since I tried installing several times. I purchased a new SATA drive, and
have had the same problem. The disc i'm using is a XP pro SP1 from an action
pack subscription, and I've also tried using a non SP1 (the orig release I
guess?) from action pack as well. I've tried everything I can think of, and
have reformatted and tried to reinstall several times, using different HDs
each time. Please help!!
