I am trying to reinstall the upgrade version of Powerpoint 2000 to my
computer after reformating my drive. I keep getting the "error 1608 set up
was unable to locate a qualifying product" even though I have Office XP
small business registered and active on my computer. What am I missing????

Office XP Small Business is not a qualifying product because it does not contain
PowerPoint. You must have had another version installed previously when you
applied the PowerPoint 2000 upgrade. Do you have Office 97 in your CD library?
If so, uninstall Office XP, install Office 97, apply the PowerPoint 2000 upgrade
and then install Office XP, in that order.

Thanks Sonia for your quick response. I am pretty good with computers and
cannot figures this out. This computer was ordered and arrived with Office
XP, it has not ever had 97. THe order also came with a shrink wrapped box
containing the upgrade to Powerpoint 2000. This installed without a problem
and I was able to use it without trouble. It was only when I reformated my
hard drive that I am getting this error.

Why did it come with PowerPoint 2000? I would think that the upgrade would be
PowerPoint 2003. You see, Office XP (aka 2002) came after Office 2000, so the
PowerPoint 2000 upgrade just can't be applied to Office XP.

The computer was purchased in May 2001. It had one of the first versions of
Office XP and Powerpoint 2003 was not yet available.

Office XP was released in June 2001, so your system might have come with an
early copy of the SBE version. I can't explain why the upgrade to PowerPoint
2000 would have worked with Office XP SBE, since the upgrade to PowerPoint 2002
didn't even work with it.

You may have to call Microsoft about this. I don't know the answer.
