I am trying to install a game, Baldurs Gate II, on my HP
Pavilion 7965. My machine came with WindowsXP home
edition preloaded. To date, we haven't increased, or
upgraded any of the factory installed hardware, or
drivers. The only changes made to WindowsXP have been
the automatic updates for security purposes. When I try
to install the game, the installation process crashes
when it encounters the *.cab files. The error message I
get is "incorrect function error", and when I attempt to
manually extract the data from the cab files I
get, ""Signature Bytes" required by the Microsoft CAB
Specifications are missing." We have another HP 510 with
exceloron processor which also runs WindowsXP
preinstalled, and the game automatically installs without
a hitch, and the disk seem to be performing perfectly.
Our CD drive appears to be functioning normally in all
aspects. Any Ideas??? Do I need to acquire
software/drivers to open unsigned CABs? The software
vendor implies that my CD is too fast and it's leaking
data durring the install, and that I need to slow it down
by turning of the chaching, or read ahead functions. I
really don't know how to do this on the XP, and am not
sure that that will fix the problem.
