IEEE 1394 - Possible IRQ Conflict

I just installed a second Maxtor hard drive onto a daisy-
chained 1394 port. Running Windows XP. Also on the
daisy chain is a Verbatim DVD-RW drive.

I notice that these drives drop in and out, all three of
them. I am also getting "serious system errors" from
time to time, which are sent out over the Internet to
Microsoft, and the diagnosis is a possible device driver
conflict.

I do know that the IEEE 1394 port and a USB port on this
computer have the same IRQ (23), but I also understood
that IRQ sharing was possible under XP. The Maxtor
support web site says that sharing resources can cause
this problem.

I have not spoken to Maxtor support yet, but was
wondering if anyone else has seen this problem, or knows
how I may further diagnose. Previously, this set-up
(daisy chain) worked fine with the first Maxtor drive and
the DVD-RW only.

Some IEEE 1394(Firewire) and USB ports can be set to turn the power off when
not in use. This can cause the problems you describe. Check on the base
port Device Manager entry and turn off the power management.
If there is not such an entry, contact Maxtor, since it is their unit.
