ICS and Networking Questions...

Hello Newsgroup,

Have 2 computers, Windows XP Pro (SP1) on both, networked with NETGEAR MA111
wireless USB adapter. Both computers are successfully networked and ICS is
in motion. My questions being;

1) Is it possible to make an icon on the client computer (client from ICS
perspective) such that the client can connect the host computer to the web
and disconnect it? It is a dialup connection, at the moment I have to dial
up from the ICS host, and disconnect from it. It would be great (not
essential just good to do) if I could place some kind of Connect\Disconnect
icon to the client desktop to do that.

2) Can either computer send some kind of shut down command to the other
computer? After those late night work duties or web surfing session, last
person to leave the tiny network, disconnects the network from the internet
and shuts down the other computer (as well as their own). It would be great
if that could be done from either computer.

Thank you very much Newsgroup, hope it can be done.

Regards,

Winux P.

1) That icon should already exist in your Network Connections folder. It
should say something like "Local Area Connection on ICSHost". If it's not
there then post back.

2) The shutdown tool from the resource kit can do this. So can remote
desktop.

Thanks for the quick response Ken,

Issue 2) has been solved, thank you very much for that, ironically I thought
it would be the most difficult one.

As for issue 1), I don't have an icon and still cannot work it out. I have
tried on the Host computer setting, 'Establish an internet connection
whenever a network computer asks for one' setting it to true and tried
unchecked. I have configured ICS via the Network Wizard and Manually, still
no icon. Also I have ZoneAlarm Pro 4.0 on both computers, I don't think
that is it though since the network runs so well, even with the internet
connected, ZAPro has never complained.

Any ideas, fixes, 'cannot be done confirmations',...etc, will be greatly
appreciated.

Kind Regards,
Winux P

1. Make the sure the "Internet Gateway Discovery and Control Client" is
checked in your networking optional components.

2. Make sure the SSDP Discovery service is running.

3. Make sure that you don't have any firewalls interfering.

Beyond that, I've heard that it doesn't work well over wireless sometimes,
but I don't know the specifics of why.

Ken,

Thank you so much, it's works very well. One point to consider as well is
to make sure Universal Plug and Play Device Host service is running on the
host machine if like me, you have as dialup USB modem. Also, reboot host
and client machines, well I had to anyway.

Thanks again Ken.

ICS should be starting the UPnP Device Host service automatically unless you
specifically disabled the service.

Anyway, glad you got it working.
