icons and quicklaunch oddities

1)I've set the icon cache to maximum using a MaxIcon cache reg edit, but no
matter what I do Explorer keeps randomly closing down and restarting, often
when I open a folder on any drive (I have 5 partitions on one drive, and a
full other drive). It even happens when I click the start button to access
the start menu; folders disappear off the desktop and then reappear Now it
may be that I've cluttered the Start Menu as it has at least 20 items
(frequently used programs!), but even so I don't see why this would happen.
Or maybe the icon cache needs flushing?

2)This one has been buggin me forever! Basically, when I drag and drop a
shortcut to one of my partitions onto the QuickLaunch bar, and later try to
access that drive through that shortcut, I get the message "The drive or
network connection this shortcut refers to is unavailable. Make sure the
disk is properly inserted or the network resource is available, and then try
again". For a start, the drive is on my pc i.e. local not a network
resource! And second, all my drives are fully accessible otherwise. All
shortcuts point to their correct targets. But here's where it gets even more
odd: if I move all 5 shortcuts to the beginning of the QuickLaunch bar, next
to the start button, and make sure that only they are visible, they ALL work
fine. But if I move them so that the QL bar is shortened to make room for
other tool bars and access it only through those 2 little arrows to extend
it, the shortcuts give that message. So far this only happens with the
shortcuts to drives C and I, and I don't see any difference between them and
the others!

TIA

Hi

In regards to your icon regedit, I'll give it a try. I also found a "xp
taskbar and desktop fixall.vbs" file, so I'll see if that helps too. Your
site is an excellent resource, btw.

The two drive shortcuts that don't work are currently C-drive and I-drive
(in fact C drive has ALWAYS had this problem), the rest are fine and work
anywhere in the QuickLaunch bar, although I can't say for sure they won't
develop the same problem!. All other icons on the QL bar, in whatever order,
whatever they are, work fine. It just seems to be links to drives,
partitions, that have this problem. I've tried recreating the shortcuts in
different ways but it makes no difference.

In the meantime I'm using other methods of accessing the affected drives off
the desktop.

Regards
Tim
