I know lots of people who have upgraded to Service Pack 3 with no
trouble at all.

To upgrade to Service Pack 3 through Windows Update, you must already
have SP 1, 1a or 2. If you have none of those, you can download the full
Service Pack 3 from Microsoft's website. (It's called the "Network
Installation Package.")

Go to Control Panel > System. On that screen, under system: it will

directly to installing SP3. If it doesn't show SP1, you must install
SP1 and then SP3 without installing SP2.

The alternative is to go from XP "Gold" (no service pack) to SP2
directly (wthout installing SP1) and then go to SP3.

Not exactly correct. You must install *either* SP1 or SP2. but don't
*need* to install them both.
