Essentially:
Download it.
Install it.

There is a bit more to it than that *to be safe*...

- Backup one more time above and beyond what should be your normal periodic
backup schedule. things *CAN* go horribly wrong - don't lose stuff because
you did not feel you had the time to copy your emails, contacts, pictures,
documents, etc to an external media for safe keeping.
- Go through all your hardware and visit each manufacturer's web page (if it
is a system like a Dell, HP, IBM, etc - just visit their support pages for
the actual computer hardware components) and download the latest driver for
Windows XP Home (32bit if you wonder) for each device. Motherboard chipset,
video card (display adapter), network card (NIC), sound card (audio) and so
on... Install those drivers prior to installing SP2.
- Go through the Add or Remove Programs control panel and ensure you only
have installed what you need. Do *not* uninstall any Windows updates or
hardware drivers/software here - just applications you do not
recognize/utilize at all.
- Go to the software manufacturer's web pages for each software package that
remains on your computer to check for updates to their software. I don't
necessarily mean major versions that you might have to purchase - but
updates to the version you have they give away for free to maintain
functionality and security.
- Utilizing your already installed and frequently updated antivirus
application - do a full system scan for viruses, trojans and worms.
- Utilizing several different antispyware applications (like
SuperAntiSpyware, LavaSoft Ad-Aware, Spybot Search & Destroy...), scan for
and eliminate possible spyware/adware/malware infestations.
- Utilize Disk Cleanup to get rid of all restoration points but the latest
and generally cleanup your system drive, etc.
- CHKDSK your system drive for errors.
- Defragment your system drive.
- Reboot one last time and install Windows Xp Service Pack 2. I recommend
you download the IT Installation file and run that from your local computer
instead of any other method.
