service pack 2 install hangs during cleanup, should I reinstall?

I was installing service pack 2 on an old computer with xp pro. When it got
to the point I think it said "cleaning up", it hung. After an hour hanging in
the clean up process, an error message came up- Service pack 2 has
encountered a problem and needs to close. After rebooting, it does show
service pack 2 in my system information. I'm concerned though that it wasn't
a clean install and might cause problems. Should I try reinstalling service
pack 2? I also don't have the latest IE, mine is vers. 6, but want to install
the latest, but want to take care of this first. And I also have norton
antivirus, which may have been on during the install, and didn't function
after the install (oops). (I then installed the latest norton internet
security 2008 after the service pack 2 install.) Thanks for any advice!

Look in the control panel and if it says SP2 you do in-fact have sp2
installed.

Now look on your HD and see if the setup folder is still there...
it will have a *very* long name filled with nothing but random characters.
That can be deleted

I don't find the folder you mentioned, but not sure what I'm looking for.
still unsettling that it didn't install properly, i hope it's going to be
stable. but reinstalling is not advised I guess right? thanks very much.

If you could not find that folder...the temp files were removed...

Although you are probably all OK I suppose that if you wanted to reinstall
SP2

you;d need to go into the control panel and uninstall it first

A cause for all sorts of problems is an AV program running while you are
installing SP2.

Right click My Computer and click Properties.
Does it list "Service Pack 2" under System?

You are fine. Two of my 3 computers did the same thing. You will find that
a LOT of people have had the same issue as you are having. Hangs on
"cleanup". SP2 has already been installed at this point. If anything,
there may be some temp files that didn't get removed, but even with both of
my "troubled" systems, I couldn't find any...

Thanks everyone. I don't notice any problems with anything, so I'm assuming
it's ok. But I'm also communicating with ms tech support, thanks for the
link. And it's interesting to hear others have had this same problem.

If MS Tech support actually figures out what happened (or is happening,) or
knows what needs to be removed to finish the "cleanup," be sure to let us
know...

Hi, No, they didn't. I sent them a nfo file, and here's what they wrote back:
From your email, I understand that the computer works just fine after
installing SP2.

After comparing the system information with a standard SP2 system, the
system files are all upgraded. So that SP2 should be installed though there
is an error occurs.

Generally, if the system works smoothly, remove SP2 will not cause big
problem (but some programs which need SP2 will fail to be started until
reinstall SP2, and updates which installed after installing SP2 will lose.)
So I can also provide the steps to remove and reinstall SP2 if you still
worry about it.

Is this a translation, or is their "English" really that bad? If a "tech
support" person wrote such a mess back to me that would certainly make me
skeptical of their ability to actually help out with a problem.

Well I was able to understand the response. Obviously a non-native english
speaker, but that's the norm now isn't it?

F

While, like you, I could understand it, it still shouldn't be that way.
Unfortunately, you are correct, that IS the norm like it or not.
