I can't defrag certain files

My C drive keeps telling me it is full,I it is keeping my computer from
working correctly. I moved all my files to E drive but when I defraged the
dialog box says it cannot defrag certain temporary files, they amount to 7
gigs of space but I cannot find them anywhere accept in the file recognition
area of the defrag dialog box. They never show up in the disc clean up dialog
box.

How large are each of your partitions / drives and how much free space
on each?

Go to Start, Control Panel, Folder Options, View, Advanced Settings
and verify that the box before "Show hidden files and folders" is
checked and "Hide protected operating system files " is unchecked. You
may need to scroll down to see the second item. You should also make
certain that the box before "Hide extensions for known file types" is
not checked. Next in Windows Explorer make sure View, Details is
selected and then select View, Choose Details and check before Name,
Type, Total Size, and Free Space.

It is likely that an allocation of 12% has been made to System Restore
on your C partition which is over generous. I would reduce it to 700
mb. Right click your My Computer icon on the Desktop and select System
Restore. Place the cursor on your C drive select Settings but this
time find the slider and drag it to the left until it reads 700 mb and
exit. When you get to the Settings screen click on Apply and OK and
exit.

Are you using any Norton utilities?

FileSize -a useful tool for use with Windows Explorer when
investigating how disk space is being used.
http://markd.mvps.org/

The download link is not obvious. Click the here in the two sentences
of the web page accessed through the link above. "I can't count the
number of times someone has asked for this. So here is a module you
can install that shows a Folder Size column in Explorer."

Next use Search option in Windows Explorer to search My computer for
files using the search criteria "*.tmp" without the quotes and notes
the file paths to the directories containing any tmp files found. Make
sure when you search My Computer you have selected Advanced Options
and clicked on the box before Search System Folders, Search Hidden
Files and Folders and Search Sub-Folders.

I would suggest you try cCleaner.

With any cleaner you need to proceed with caution. To be safe you
should create a restore point before using cCleaner. cCleaner also
offers backup before removal.

When using cCleaner think twice before checking Autocomplete Form
History under Internet Explorer. You do get a warning but this one has
irritating consequences. You may need to restore your system's
recollection of passwords after use so keep a record off computer so
that they can easily be re-entered.

Leave the Scan for Issues option alone.

After running cCleaner use the search option in Windows Explorer and
all tmp files should be gone but if any haven't tell us a typical file
name and the file path to the directory where it is. Now run Disk
Defragmenter.

I have given you above some suggestions to create more space on your
C partition. I can make further suggestions,

Hope this helps.
