defrag d drive

iles. I tried to defragment my d drive and I get a message saying there is
only 12% space and it requires at least 15%. Said to get rid of some of my
files.
I don't have any music stored, and I thought the d drive was for music.
What files are they talking about?

I did the disc cleanup and hard drive defrag and have oodles of space.

The D: drive (or any drive) is for whatever *you* want to use it for.
No drive is for anything in particular.

What files are they talking about?

They are talking about whatever files are there. I can't see your
system from here, so I have idea what you have there. Look at the D:
drive in My Computer to see what's there.

"Oodles of space" doesn't quite cut it.
Open My Computer.
From menu select View, Details
You should see Total Size and Free Space on the line with D: drive.
Make sure the Free Space number is at least 20% of the Total Size
number. If Total Size is 50 GB, then Free Space should be 10 GB or more.
If Free Space is less than 10 GB, you need to delete some files or move
them to another drive or removable media -- a CD-R, for example.
I know the defrag says 15% but you need to have some margin there so you
won't run into this problem on a regular basis.
Incidentally, don't just move the files to the recycle bin. You won't
gain any space that way until you empty the recycle bin.
Many users never defrag, but generally it's a good idea once in a while,
at least.
