Defrag errors

Every time I try to run defrag I either get an an error message or it says
it's out of memory.
The error messages say "The scan has been cancelled because an error
occurred in file C:\WINDOWS\ ****" where *** is the file or folder name. The
errors are for different files (logfiles folder, ctres.dll, file_store_32,
{ooooooo1-000000000000....bak, updreg and now $NTUninstallKB899588_0$ folder).
The first 4 I ended up moving out of windows into a spare folder in my
documents folder after checking the windows folder on another compyter to
make sure they weren't in there.
Since the last one is a hidden folder I thought I'd better get more advice
before touching it.
The scan doesn't always hang at the same file either, once it hung at
file_store_32, then at ctres a few times then at file_store again. (this was
before I moved them all out of the windows folder).
I've shut down everything else I can think of, my cpu usage is at 2% and
I've looked at performance and have the following commit charge:
Total 274948
Limit 3517936
Peak 391632

I've also reregistered the defrag files and reinstalled defrag from the inf
file. I'm still getting the error at $NTuninstall... message.

Things to do:

run chkdsk /f

also run a RAM test

and run the harddrive manufafturer's diagnostic

Defrag errors like that are almost always due to a running process. Screen
Saver, some network connection, and so on. Call up task manager to see what
is going on.

I've gone through task manager and shut down all processes that I can see
aren't necessary to run the computer. There are others that I don't know what
they are so I've left them alone.

I tried running defrag in safe mode a couple of times but I get the message
"Connection to defrag engine was lost. Please restart defrag".

I also ran chkdsk and now the analyze gets almost to the end and hangs at
WINDOWS\Uninst.

I can't find anything about testing RAM and I can't find the manufacturers
disk for my harddrive.

Before running Disk Defragmenter you should run Disk CleanUp.

Select Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp to
Empty your Recycle Bin and Remove Temporary Internet Files. Also
select Start, All Programs, accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp,
More Options, System Restore and remove all but the latest System
Restore point. Run Disk Defragmenter.

How much free disk space in the volume (partition) you are working on.

Open Disk Defragmenter and click on Analyse. Select View Report and
click on Save As and Save. Now find VolumeC.txt in your My Documents
Folder and post a copy.

Try running HD Tune(freeware).

Download and run it and see what it turns up.
http://www.hdtune.com/

Select the Info tabs and place the cursor on the drive under Drive
letter and then double click the two page icon ( copy to Clipboard )
and copy into a further message.

Select the Health tab and then double click the two page icon ( copy
to Clipboard ) and copy into a further message. Also do a full surface
scan with HD Tune.

Hope this helps.
